Always intended to do Bay to Breakers when I lived there, but never did. I lived over in the Sunset and instead of running it myself, would just watch the madness go by.

I've run every Bay to Bonkers since 1975 except one ... the year I had an Achilles injury.

We've got Critical Mass in Chicago, too, but I've never ridden with them. As much as I love my car, I feel guilty hanging with them. That, and there's an unwritten code that it's unethical for a civil/roadway engineer to knowingly and purposefully impede traffic on a major scale. I could lose my license

I've only ridden in one Critical Mass ... the rather infamous July 25, 1997 ride documented in Wikipedia ... never again
I live in the East Bay and think you should consider an east Bay location near a BART station. That way you can bring your MINI and not pay extra for parking.
