I think that the ferry is $45 for the car and the driver, but I know you can check the prices as well as the schedule online.

Hey Rob:

I'll try to make the rally this upcoming weekend. I was the guy who pissed next to you at the water falls.

Boy that's romantic....

Have a great thanksgiving...

How much does that cost for a MINI and it's pilot? Do they do evening cruises, or just daylight? If I don't get lost going to the start, I'm in.

Hiya .

Want to motor together so we don't get lost. I was thinking about the Ferry as well to Port Jeff and Bridgeport or Southold area to New London.

Just consider it another leg for Reservoir Run

I checked the Ferry Sched. $37.50 for car and driver. Then they bump you to $50 for driver and unlimmitted passengers. Looks like there is no limit o the number of Long Island girls you can briing back.

Seems they have one every hour intill 9;30

Let me know if you want to hook up again from Ct to New York and join the Westchester group. I don't have a Caravan. Would a Windstar work?

ok.... havent figured the exact count... since I just logged on again.. < sorry all.. certain med problems stopped me from uploading the images last nite>

but.. the meeting is the TOP of the SOUTH Parking Garage... that's the one next to Nordstrom's .. the entrance by the Panini place will be open (it opens early anyway... so you could use the bathroom and get a cup of coffee.. etc..)

basically we will leave and circle out the garage.. and then circle out the mall and onto the Meadowbrook going north.. and then east on the Northern State. (yes there will be a few parkways here... going out to Round Swamp Road and then going north.
then turning into the West Hills Park and taking that over to Sweet Hollow Road , the south, then east on Old Country to Wolf Hill which should turn into South Path.. which will take us down to Half Hollow Hills Road..
At that we will take it to the start of what is left of the Long Island Motor Parkway.. the FIRST Limited Access Parkway in the US..(aka the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway.. and we will take that All the way to Lake Ronkonkama.. it Still has gentle banks on it's turns and such.. and was designed that way!

After that we will circle the lake.. and go down to the south service road of the LIE.. and then take that approx 20 miles out to rt 24 /edwards road.. which we will take south/east toward Riverhead.. passing one of the Riverhead traffic circles...
taking it down past the Big Duck and down to Hampton Bays and rt 27a. This will then be the slower part.. as we caravan thru ALL the Hamptons on the south fork.. following rt 27A all the out to Montauk Point .

belive it or not.. I dont really have a return route mapped... but there are several ways to go depending on where you want to.. (I could actually play it by ear... since i've gone all over that area and most of the island for a long time... those who need to go back to NE and the boston area can take the roads to Sag Harbor and then Ferry to Shelter Island. then Ferry to Greenport.. and then east to Orient Point to the New London Ferry...
others can go back up north and go up to either Sound Ave on the north (great sorta inexpensive seafood resteraunt there Sue and I go out to a LOT) and take that back to Port Jefferson and the Bridgeport Ferry...

or just take either the LIE back west... or just take Rt 27 ALL the way back west... (it is hwy most of the ride) with an optional route south onto the Robert Moses Causeway and down to Ocean Parkway .. a rather empty bypass of all the rest... and a straight road to Jones Beach.

If I had my way.. the real Long Island route would last 2 days!!!

now to come up with the new list and maybe historical facts...
man... Peter of the RDR put us all to shame.. it wasnt just the drive.. but ALL the info and such!!! and the handout!!! REALLY great!!!

Rob

but.. here is the current count.. (if i forgot.you... just shoot me and I am sorry)
(there are some who are on both... but this lists the names of those who are on either one and the other or both...

NMA:

mamamini
d-mini-ero
Arnel
Nomonstersinme
vdubdoug
maganoo
SkAlex
antsmini
cooperspeed <-maybe
lurch70
suprchrgdmini
red <-maybe(hopefully)
dkstone
fdnypd
jackmanAVP
MaxaMini
Pezboy

MINI2:

Nick Ara
GMINI
KPSMini
uptick (maybe)

yeah a lot are on both and have posted on both...

so.. guess I need to figure out a handout.. (actually you can just DL the list I posted here)

guess I will need to do a history info sheet like Peter did.... (smile)
then again.. for the Long Island Motor Parkway.. here is the motor parkway panel site:
http://www.motorparkway.com/default.htm

and yes.. the Robert Friedman and Susan Friedman on the panel are us!
see Sam Berliner's article on the LIMP to get the real info on the road we will be taking!!

as for Roosevelt Field... yes it is a large shopping mall and it was (assumed to be) the site where Lindbergh took off for the 1st non-stop flight across the Atlantic. here is Newsday's "Long Island Our Story":
http://www.newsday.com/extras/lihistory/8/hs803a.htm

then there is Lake Ronkonkama,, which we will be circling.... :
also from Newsday's "Long Island Our Story" :
http://www.newsday.com/extras/lihis...wn/hist004j.htm

the there is Montauk Point Lighthouse....
(yes again from Newsday...)
http://www.newsday.com/extras/lihistory/5/hs501sd1.htm

and of course the Big Duck!!
http://www.newsday.com/extras/lihistory/7/hs720a.htm

hope that helps a bit!!

Rob

I might be able to go. Is it really three ferries to get back to somewhere close? Would be wanting to get back to land as close to Boston as possible. Anywhere further up the coast than Bridgeport, heh.

Here's the way back to Oz. Less Yellow Brick Road. More Yellow Ferries

those who need to go back to NE and the boston area can take the roads to Sag Harbor and then Ferry to Shelter Island. then Ferry to Greenport.. and then east to Orient Point to the New London Ferry...

I'm trying to figure out what time I would have to leave Litchfield to meet the Westchester group and make it to Long Island for 9;30.

For the Bostonians, you're going to spend more time afloat than motoring. If you really feel like doing the aquatic route, go across to Bridgeport from Port Jefferson, then motor up 95 2 hours to beantown. Hopping a series of boats makes no sense. Those things are not as fast as an S. If it's a 4 hour tour, you're better off with wheels than propellers.

It seems there is a potential group with some discussion of a caravan from Westchester. FDNYPD was talking earlier about meeting somwhere.
I too would return Via Port Jeff to Bridgeport and back to Litchfield CT.

Yes ANT we will most likely have to meet at Dunkins around 8:00-8:30. May not hit too much traffic on an Sunday morning out to the Island but it is very unpredictable. ALSO it is Thanksgiving weekend !!!!! Toughest time to travel.

I could probably hook with Uptick who lives in Irvington. Not far from Valhalla.

Will have to keep the partying on Saturday night to a MINImum (get it)

I also like KoolMini's idea of motoring there and ferry back. That could be KOOL. Plus could sleep or eat on ferry....

Let me think about some options for us !

Gobble Gobble to all !!!!

other ways....

from The End (sorta advertised nickname for Montauk Point), you could head back to PJ (Port Jefferson) and pick up the ferry there to Bridgeport.. it is a great ride.. though there is a cost to it.. (plus you can get a great bite to eat in PJ.. right across from the Ferry slip.. inexpensive seafood called The Steamroom)
all sorts of nice ways to get there. To be honest.. on Jan 1 when Sue and I usually go out to the point... we usually end up at the Steamroom for dinner.. or late lunch. (i like the NE Clam Chowder in a bread bowl.. plus the steamed lobster.. which used to be one the least expensive on the island) who knows.. I might end up there for dinner anyway.. only an hour from my home here in Freeport.

other things to be aware of...

after much thought and thinking out how we stopped a few times en route around here.. we will probably make a brief "stretch the legs" type stop at the Big Duck... unfortunatly there are no facilities there... other than the male type.. .. but once we are down on Rt 27a.. whoever has to stop for whatever reason.. to catch up just stay on rt 27a!! (Montauk Hwy)

one more thing... if you have never been to Montauk Point in the late fall or winter... be aware.. it can get COLD!! and WINDY!! so unless the weather turns incredibly warm.. dont show up in shorts!!! (then again.. one time Sue and I went there and werent dressed well.. we ended up with two fleeces from the gift shop/snack bar)

Once you are there... yes there are great views.. and a walk down to the beach is almost traditional. For those that like... more... well.. really unique parks.. yes there is the Lighthouse there... but along side Montauk Point State Park is the new Camp Hero State Park.. where there are some nice trails and what is left of an old SAGE Radar installation.. let alone some really odd stories about Camp Hero.. the entrance is from the same loop that you take at the point.
oh since I do work in a camera store.. those who dont bring their cameras will be shot.. sorry..

and sorry for no formal ride back... but there are so many differnt ways.. I dont know how i would go myself..

probable way for Sue and I... back down 27a.. heading to riverhead and rt 24 (by the Duck again) but heading north to Sound Ave once we are in Riverhead... and probably eating at a place called the Lobster Roll Northside.. sister to a place called "LUNCH" down in Napeague. (if it is closed.. we will head to PJ and the steamroom..)

oh more sick jokes.. for those who didnt get enough of RDR's passing by Indian Point.. you can go by Wading River and see the remains of the Shoram Nuclear Plant.. or think of this.. when you pass Brookhaven Labs .. there were 2 reactors there..(both now closed down... have a funny story about the first one on Long Island.. nothing harmful..just funny)

hope that helps!!

Rob

OK well its been decided. The Westchester Caravan will be meeting at 7:45 at the Kensico Dam. NOT Dunkin Donuts. So far its me, Uptick and Jackman. We will leave the dam at 8 sharp in order to make it to LI with all the traffic.

Unfortunately, I think I'm going to have to slide over to the "maybe" group because of some family conflicts that occured. I'll do my best to be there though.

Sk.. still hoping you will make it!!

to the northern crowd.. as Dennis showed (thanks Dennis.. and you also told Steve @ Hassel .. i also stop in there a lot.. as i said.. they are only 4 blocks away)
Roosevelt Field is a large shopping mall that is right off the Meadowbrook Parkway.

to access the South Parking garage's top level from the Meadowbrook...
when you come off the meadowbrook from either north or south,.. do not turn!!!!
repeat DO NOT TURN!!! GO STRAIGHT ACROSS THE RING ROAD AND GO UP INTO THE GARAGE.. AS FAR UP AS YOU CAN.
Sue and I should be (hopefully) waiting on the top of the Parking Garage probably near the outer wall that faces the Meadowbrook... (that does mean a walk to enter the mall... also you might have to sign in with security.. Rest Rooms (yes.. not trees!!) are located on the main floor at the Norstrom's wing. and there is a coffee place right when you come in!!)

Also found out today (from the mall) that we are welcomed to be there....(yeah) and the mall opens on Sunday November 30th @10:00 am meaning the STORES open at that time... the mall will be open to walk into before!! (it usually always is a bit earlier)
so be aware.. we would like to leave right on time at 9:30 AM... no later than 9:45 am..

IF YOU ARE TRYING TO MEET US AND ARE RUNNING LATE... PLEASE USE THE WALKIE-TALKIE ON CHANNEL 7. SUB 0.
WE WILL BE LEAVING VIA THE SAME MEADOWBROOK PARKWAY ENTRANCE AND HEADING NORTH TO THE NORTHERN STATE PARKWAY..THEN GOING EAST. IF IT IS AFTER 9:45 OR EVEN 10:00 JUST START LOOKING FOR US ON THE RADIO AND CATCH UP ON THE NORTHERN STATE. WE WILL BE ON IT UNTIL ROUND SWAMP ROAD..

There is a parking lot on HighHold drive right past Round Swamp Road at the West Hills Park.. you could pick us up there.... if need be.

We are not adverse to picking up people along the way... no problem whatesoever!!

as said before.. just save the route and print it out as a text file (it's an earlier message) and just monitor the channel.. or drive along the route...

hey.. we will be stopping out by the Big Duck definataly and if others need a stop.. I am not adverse to making other stops along the Motor Parkway (our main route out on the island to Lake Ronkonkama) EX: there is the HUGE Parking lot out at the Marriot Wind Watch (the former Colonie Hill)

Sue and I will be making a "dry run" on saturday (if anyway wants to do this twice!!) and probably ending up afterwards in Baiting Hollow at the Lobster Roll Northside.

Sunday we will probably end up in Port Jefferson at the Steamroom for both great NE Chowder and to see other off on the Ferry!!! (bon voyage!)
before heading back ...oh one of several ways!

oh warning.. i also use for guidance the device mentioned in the "unauthorized" MINI Cooper Manual.. aka the "magic eight ball" hey.. have to have some fun!
(it usually says "reply hazy try again".... kinda like a bad palantir)

ok.. i've rambled enough... hope all have a great turkey day!!

Rob
