I am putting together a trip to combine motoring in some super scenic areas with canoeing down the Delaware River. Here are the details. Meet in Stamford, CT at the MINI of Fairfield County dealership at 7:30-8:00 am. Leave at 8:00 sharp for a 90-100 mile trip to the Delaware River in New York State. The basic route is I-95, I-287, drive by Westchester MINI(pick up point), go across the Tappan Zee Bridge, I-87 to route 17, to route 84, to exit 1 in New York. Go north 15-20 miles to Pond Eddy,New York. The trip on route 97 is beautiful, with the longest series of S turns you'll see, around Hawk's Nest. The cost for canoeing is roughly 25-30 dollars each. They have rafts as well as canoes. 2 people per canoe, rafts will hold 3-5 people. The river is fairly mild, with a few rapids (class 1 and 2 maximum). The river trip will take 3-5 hours, and the shuttle bus will bring you back to where the MINIs are parked. Bring a lunch and beverages in a cooler to enjoy riverside. Bring swimsuits, the water is beautiful in July. Any questions? scott.nickel@minifairfieldcounty.com
I hope to see you all on the river!

The only thing missing on this post is the date we're doing this thing. Sorry! It's July 27th, 2003. Heavy rains will cancel the boating part, we'll go somewhere for lunch instead. Happy motoring!

Just last night I was talking to my partner about motoring on 97. I used to have a friend who lived in Pond Eddy and remember my first drive out to her place, at night, in the dark. It scared the sh*t out of me then, but I was not driving a MINI.

I'm in for the event, but I will be coming from NJ and it doesn't make sense for me to caravan with all of you. Any other NJ MINI owners want to follow me up to meet these guys on the Delaware?

If I'm around, I'd definitely be up for it. Should have some more mods by then in any case to really test the waters(figuratively)...

Dan, I've been missing you at the last couple of events. Try to make it to this one, k? I'm dying to see your MINI in all it's modded glory. (are you doing the sway bar next?)

I'm looking forward to attending this MINI meet, but like HARMINI, I'm stranded in NJ with no other motorers. Please contact me as to where is the best location for me (as well as any MINIs accompanying me) can meet the rest of the pack. Email me at EJP2@njit.edu...later.

Welcome to MCO italianjobmini

I'll be in touch. There are a few of us from NJ that want to caravan.

BUT.....I heard a rumor that this trip was cancelled. I'll do a little poking around to see if I can confirm.

To end the rumor.... officially. This trip is on. The only thing to affect the river trip is severe weather. If it's only drizzling, raining, we're allowed to go down the river. If it's supposed to rain heavily all day, we can go out on the river. It's less fun when it's cold and wet. The outfitter will not allow us to go out in a thunderstorm. If we are already on the river, we pull over during lightning, and wait out the storm under cover. We have at least 30 people confirmed already, with more every day calling and emailing.
For the New Jersey people, and upstate New Yorkers, we can meet at the outfitters. The place is called Jerry's, on route 97 about 15 miles north of Port Jervis. We anticipate arriving at 10:30 or so, and heading out on the water by 11:00. I will post telephone numbers for Jerry's as well as my cell. Cell phones do not work on route 97 at all. Take care,

Scott

For all the NEW JERSEY MINI's out there that would like to meet up on our way to Port Jervis, contact me as soon as possible so that we may find an arbitrary meeting point to start our rally from. If we plan correctly, we should be able to meet up with the rest of them earlier on the road. Email me if you're in NJ and would like to meet up. Later. Ejp2@njit.edu

Eric,

Was just at MINI2 and saw that FDNYPD suggested this:

>>For the Jersey contingent, if you travel up to 87 North New York State Thruway, we can meet before the tolls at the rest stop after the Tappan Zee Bridge, and then go to exit 16, route 17 West to I-84, and then the other rest stop is on 84 about 2-3 miles before exit 1, at the top of the big downhill to the valley. Tentatively, we will be canoeing/rafting from Jerry's at Pond Eddy, New York. If you would rather meet there, that's fine also. <<

Sounds good to me. I'd rather go up 287 than up 206 on a Sunday morning, even if it means a few more miles. What do you think?

The weather looks great for Sunday. Bring the super soakers, and the swimming gear. Don't forget sunblock. Our ETA is as follows. Leave Stamford at 8:00, arrive at Westchester MINI at 8:20, leave at 8:30, go over the Tappan Zee, and stop at the first rest stop past the bridge on 87/287 at approx. 8:45-9:00, get off exit 16, which is 17West/North, head to 84, go west to rest stop top of the hill between exit 2 and 1 in New York. Get off at exit 1 in New York, go left, into town, follow 97 North approx. 15 miles to the outfitter named Jerry's. They are on the left after a pretty steep down hill. The phone contact numbers are: Scott Nickel cell 203-558-1941, work is 203-348-4700 (I work Saturdays) and Jerry's is 845-557-6078. It's going to be a blast. scott.nickel@minifairfieldcounty.com[/EMAIL] Take care,

Scott

It's that time folks. Yes, the water is warm and clear, the MINIs are ready to motor. Time for dead bugs on the bonnet, and smiles on our faces, and in our hearts. Ready to motor down the Delaware. One thing I will stress is that we are motoring, not racing. I will lead a reasonable pace, nobody will fall asleep, but we're not going to jail either. If you like the esses at Hawk's Nest, and nobody else is around, go back and do them again, and again. Get those super soakers ready, bring sun block stuff, bring a little lunch, and a beverage if you like. Responsibilty is a long word, but we can pull this off without getting in too much trouble. Anyone wishing to contact me can at 203-348-4700 at work(every day but Sunday), my cell phone nights, and weekends, 203-558-1941, or email scott.nickel@minifairfieldcounty.com
The canoe outfitter is Jerry's, and their number is 845-557-6078. Cell phone service is spotty at best past Port Jervis. Leave them in your MINI when we are on the water. Time table:
7:30 meet at MINI of Fairfield County
8:00 leave Stamford
8:20 arrive at MINI of Westchester
8:30 leave Westchester
8:45 pick up MINIs at rest stop on 287/87 just past Tappan Zee Bridge
9:00 up to exit 16..route 17W or North to route 84
9:45-10:00 pickup MINIs at rest stop on 84 between exit 2 and 1 in New York
10:30 meet at Jerry's on route 97 in Pond Eddy New York.
11:00 head downriver.
3:30-4:00 Port Jervis-Matamoras base, get on buses for return to Jerry's
These times are approximate....we'll do our best to make them without getting in trouble. See you on the river!

The weather report for Port Jervis for tomorrow is predicting Tstorms starting after 3pm. That should give us just enough time to canoe and then get back to our MINIs before the storm hits.

This thread discusses how to carry your MINI keys when you are canoeing. Duct tape?

Geeze. Thanks Kim! Guess I have to remember to bring my valet key tomorrow. What's this about it having a CHIP in it? What could posssibly be the purpose of THAT?

And are you really thinking of tipping our canoe? How clean is this river, anyway?

I just happened upon that thread this morning and thought it coincided nicely with this trip.

But seriously, I learned my key lesson the hard way. Secure it to your person. I once had a pocket book fly out of my lap at the top of Rolling Thunder in Great Adventure. It hung from the scaffolding (with my keys in it) all day/night until the park closed and one of the operators climbed up to retrieve it.

Weather update: Now, they say that the storm won't hit until 6pm. Excellent!!

That's quite a purse-snatching story... Glad it ended well. So are we going swimming or what? Inquiring minds want to know.

If we tip, I guess we're going swimming

I'm bringing a dry change of clothes just in case.

I'll see you at the rest stop before the tolls. I'll be there by 8:30. I'm sure you'll see my car.

If anyone needs a radio, I have an extra one to lend. Get it from me at the rest stop.

Cheers,
Kim
