Nav Unit DVD Drive Vibration?

I have the MINI Nav System. Shortly after taking delivery of the MINI I notice what sounded like a vibration somewhere in the cockpit when I was accelerating and shifting gears. Later I heard the same sound when I was at a dead stop. It was then that I discovered that it was the DVD drive spinning about every 3-5 seconds.

The odd thing is that it doesn't always do this. So I took it in to MINI Service and lo and behold it actually happened when the technician was in the MINI with me. There fix was to replace the whole DVD drive with a new one. Well, that didn't work as the new drive does the exact same thing.

So I have a few questions: Does anyone else with Nav hear this DVD drive issue? Does the DVD drive have to spin the disc every 3-5 seconds to access maps, etc to display? If you have heard this sound, did you do anything to damper the noise?

It is not a big deal. but it really gets annoyng after a while.

Perhaps try a different map disc... it might be out of balance (i.e. slightly warped), and a fresh disc might not vibrate in the drive...

It's still going to spin a lot (they all do - it needs to read map data all the time!), but it shouldn't be so noisy that it is bothersome.

I don't recall noticing anything like that, I only hear it spin up when I first get in the car - maybe you can compare it to other cars on the lot with the tech.

I have the old CD based system and I don't hear anything like what you are describing.
