Front speaker depth

I'm starting to research options for replacing the sound system in my MINI. My main question now is how deep can you go for the front woofer and still be able to fit behind the factory grill? I know I'll have to make or buy spacers to push the speakers out due to the stock design but I want to know how big these spacers can be.

I've done some searches and found the stock speaker has a mounting depth of around 2.5" including the factory "spacer". This means it intrudes 1.25" into the door panel. With a thicker spacer, can a speaker that requires 3 or 3.5" top mount depth be used? How much room is there between the factory speaker and the grill...

Thanks

I have Boston Pro60s in GBMINI, they fit but they're not 3"+

There's very little space between front of stock speaker and door panel - the speaker has about 1/4" foam seal so I'm assuming the gap is less than that. You get a good inch out from door panel using an adaptor:

Behind the door trim is the window mechanism, that's the main limit to space (see http://www.gbmini.net/gallery/Kicker...SC_0157?full=1); don't remember the depth now but I'd at about 1-1/2", suggesting a total depth of 2-1/2" or so

These Focals look very interesting to me although they are expensive...$300-350 and would need to be amp'd. I've never heard them but after all...they are Focals!

Does anyone have them?

Thanks Ian. That's what I wanted to know. I've been looking at Infinity just because I have them in another car and like the quality and response (even when getting 20w rms from a headunit). Right now, the Kappa 60.7 looks good (2 3/16" depth) but I'll have to amp it since it runs at 2 ohms. I'll probably run Kappa 6x9's in the rear as well. What are the depth constraints for the rear's?

There's at least 6" in the rear (non-convertible); loads of space!
