Beginning of the end.

Well, I'm still swearing that I won't spend money on aftermarket gear till the car is totally paid off, but a subwoofer for the sound system isn't really an add-on, it's a necessity... Right?

Tonight I spoke with an able friend of mine, with connections, and hammered out a deal, as follows:

a profile 400W RMS x1 (4 ohm) amp
a 12" Alpine Type-R (500W RMS at 4 ohm)
1.0cu/ft sealed box
-- for --
an undisclosed amount of money
a broken amp
an old Blaupunk HU
my junk Saab (the last three )

Juicy.

Before talking to him, I was leaning towards cheaper options, like an entry-level Rockford Fosgate or Polk. Was even considering a 15", but would have had to make serious concessions in terms of power & the amp. And I was going to attempt to make the box myself. I'm going to spend a little more money than I would have liked, but for much more bass in the end. Almost went with other options for better SQ, but considering that I'm going to be keeping stock HU and speakers for quite awhile, it didn't make sense. SQ isn't going to be steller either way. But now I'll have something nice to start out with.

But does anyone around here cram a 15" into the trunk? It'd be pretty tight.

RedSkunk,

I just got my MCS '06 May 19, 2006...

I just bought an amp and a sub. I plan on installing the Amp this weekend and get the box build as soon as I have time.

The amp I got is Alpine MRP-450 (400w RMS @ 2ohm)
and the sub I got is Alpine 10" 4 ohm Type R series 500w RMS

I will be wiring the sub at 2 ohm to get the 400W RMS out of the amp.

I am using the stock HU (non h/k) using a LOC for the rca's

The reason i choose a 10" is because i want to use as little space as possible in the boot for the box, and I dont think anyone would need anything bigger than a 10" to add some bass... unless of course you want to be heard 2 blocks away, then you will need something bigger...

Let me know how yours turns out... and maybe I'll remember to take some pictures of my install...

You guys must deaf, or I'm just old, but I can't imagine needing more sound in a mini than the HK puts out. I can't get it anywhere max and my ears start to bleed!

I dont have the H/K and it bugs me how little bass the non H/K system puts out... hence the added sub... the non H/K system does annoy my ears, because my last stereo in my last car was a hell of lot better, so the first step is bass... then the next step is a 4 channel amp with new speakers :D

I have H/K and love it. Plenty loud with great sound.

Box is built, my friend is very good at the actual box-building, altho the carpeting job was a little weak. Ah well!

The box takes up half of the trunk, width wise. We put it on the right, and made a few notches so it fits flat + won't move in hard motoring. Heighth wise, it's nearly flush with the lip of the hatch, and angles up, so the top of the back is just below the latch to push the seat down.

Going to mount the amp on the back of the driver's side backseat. I'll need to get pics soon. Amp + sub will be coming in the next few days.

Tell me how that 10" Type-R works out, Arty!
