NBT EVO ID4 to Touchscreen with CarPlay and SiriusXM
Hello all i have a pre-lci f56 with the NBE evo non touch screen . i would like to have carplay ( i have 06CP preparation apple carplay that mini says " there is no carplay option " ) i see the radio has a wlan connector . what would i have to buy to have carplay ? i don't really want the MMI option
Hi - a Mini F55/F56/F57 that came from the factory with an NBT Evo and a non-touchscreen has what’s referred to as an ID4 NBT Evo (which means it has 2gb of ram and only supports Apix 1 (non-touch) screens. The Minis that came from the factory with CarPlay and NBT Evos have what’s referred to as ID5/ID6 NBT Evos (these have 4GB of ram, but after a certain firmware, only support Apix 2 screens.
The ID4 NBT Evos were never intended to have CarPlay installed, but people have figured out how to update them to the firmware intended for the ID5/ID6 NBT Evos, and then CarPlay can be enabled. Factory navigation becomes unstable due to the ram limitations, but CarPlay is stable. Some people will claim they can do this and have nav remain stable - I don’t believe them.
It’s also possible to retrofit a native ID5/ID6 NBT Evo and modify the firmware to support the Apix 1 non-touchscreen. This would provide the stability of the ID5/ID6 headunit when using factory nav (because it has 4GB of ram), but would allow you to keep your Apix 1 screen to save money.
I have a lot of experience with this stuff and am happy to try to answer questions. I also sell retrofits and coding if you’re interested.
Did you add 6CP to your car, or did a prior owner?
im not too sure who did the retrofit ( was owned by mini usa corporate out of NJ for the first owner ) and I'm friends with the previous owner and he says he never did it so maybe corporate did it ? rest of the retrofits were done by me at work ( im a technician at a mini dealer ) how hard would it be for me to " update " to a newer system per-say. i know it can get costly. i would like to have a touch screen :P
