Another (different) R56 Y-cable question

Hi,

First post, and I was going to ask this in the similar-but-different Y-cable thread below, but linked to another thread and it didn't post, so probably better to ask separately.

So! First of all, hello. Second, I recently bought an '09 MCS R56 with the standard Boost radio and no navigation. It has the USB + Aux module under the toggle switches. I haven't tried the USB stick approach (but assume it would work) but my typical audio playing is streamed from Spotify on my iPhone, so that's what I was trying to achieve. Aux works fine - both from a 3.5mm jack to my iPhone (6S with a headphone jack) and my girlfriend's (X, no headphone jack, with the 3.5mm to lightning adapter).

I was hoping 'USB' in the menu would be what enabled me to connect the iPhones and control them from the wheel etc (but suspect I was wrong). There isn't an iPod icon in the menu (nor is there the iPod adapter box in the glovebox). Anyway, I picked up the BMW/Mini Lightning to USB and 3.5mm Y-cable and it was probably a mistake (but at least I got a decent deal on it). It does charge the phone, but nothing else (no sound over Aux or USB).

Discovering that and doing more reading here I should have done ahead of time I'm guessing that adapter just won't work (unless I had the glovebox iPod connection, maybe? and iPod icon in the menu?) but I figured I'd ask here anyway since I haven't seen this exact combination talked about.

My current solution is the Belkin Lightning to Lightning + 3.5mm adapter cabled to both the USB and Aux port (so one plug into either phone results in both charging and playing over Aux), which solves the main problem, just doesn't give me car control of the phone. (My prior, otherwise worse car had a newer stereo so I was used to playing and controlling my phone over USB, but I don't foresee putting in a 3rd party stereo in for a while.)

So - does anyone with more experience with this know definitively if there is any hope of controlling a phone from the car with my current radio, and is the Mini cable any use to me? If not I suppose I can post it in the classifieds here first.

Thank you!

This... But ONLY for music.... The Phone will not answer with it.....
It says that "You can still use the original or aftermarket Bluetooth phone hands free in your car and simultaneously stay connected for music playback"

But, how would it do that ??? my iPhone can only connect to one bluetooth at a time??

Or this....
Has phone and Siri button compatibility.... plus a better microphone...

Your stereo VOLUME would work on the steering wheel tho.

I've looked into this more than most can be expected to value... this is what I'm probably going with in my PW R56

Available at the online retailer that starts with an A and has prime.

Thanks! Those are good suggestions. Probably Bluetooth is the way to go.

Also, I am an idiot and posted this in the 3rd gen forum instead of the 2nd gen, apparently (and then didn't realize it posted at all, I think it was being moderated for a while). Mods, if you want to move, feel free, sorry!

Both are "Bluetooth"...in that they are bluetooth to the unit itself... but it is playing through your AUX input or iPod input.

The first will allow you to control tracks back and forth from your steering wheel with Spotify/Pandora/iTunes etc... but NOT the phone... most phones can't be paired to more than one device at a time.

The second one will allow you control the phone and music but not with the steering wheel... and has a decent microphone in it... It is bluetooth connected to your phone... but it plays through the aux 3.5mm port input. The steering wheel VOLUME control WILL work.

Another option I'm considering is the Flic button. and just connect the phone through the aux 3.5mm jack. ... but I will be giving up the track fwd/back
