New head unit ideas

Hey all,

I decided today that the H-K head unit will not meet my needs for my stereo project. Therefore the boss has given her blessing to buy a new head unit with one condition. It HAS TO use the MFSW on the steering wheel. No IR unit, plug and play baby. She has declared the MINI a "no drill zone".

That being said, is there or has anyone seen a list of HU that will work with MFSW with the correct adapter?

At this point it doesn't matter whose HU it is. I will worry about that later.

Thanks!

T.

Are you married to the boss? Cuz I have been trying to get my boss (from my day job) to send me a new radio for the longest time.

Talk with MikeyTheMINI over on MINI2. In Europe at least some head units have a connector for a remote input and he sells adaptors to convert the MFSW to that input.

Don't know if any US head units have the same feature - but it gives you a starting point for a search ...

If you haven't already, go to crutchfield.com, I seem to remember they sell an adapter kit. I think most if not all new alpine decks will plug and play. Also see http://www.newministuff.co.uk

I feel your pain though. My wife won't even let me install driving lights myself.

did the same thing

got our mini in may. didnt like the head unit. my BOSS wanted the steering buttons functional. i wanted the radio to look stock. settled on a Clarion that has the same mandarin illumination and very stock look, but i DID have to get the IR unit to control the buttons. it is completely invisible to the naked eye. the sender is installed in the little console behind the handbrake. i would defy anyone to find the sender. good luck to you...am sending some pics....( btw, the boss thinks i did really well due to the stock look)..

The more and more I look, the more I am resigning myself to the fact that I may very well have to get the IR adaptor. But I am enjoying the search. Money being umlimited I would probably get the Alpine CDA-7990.

Buuuuttttt since I spent a lot more than I thought, I'm thinking the 9835 with the iPod adaptor.

ANybody have a 9835 and have any thoughts?

Hi lapex,

Few questions ...

- Is the IR adaptor come as those regular adaptor for aftermarket stereo, so you don't need another adaptor to hook up the 845 to the speakers?
- Is the installation difficult? How long it took you?
- Any photo of the sender?

Thanks.

Clarion Head Unit

Cant answer many of the questions since a stereo shop installed the unit. I do know that the IR unit that patches the steering wheel buttons to the stereo is called a SWIX unit and costs about $80.
