I need bluetooth and backup camera. Apparently there isn't room enough for a pop-up screen in an R52, so I'm considering a JVC KD-AV41BT. Anyone installed one? How do you like it?

I don't have any feedback to give you for JVC KD-AV41BT, but...
First of all, your question should be directed more broadly at 1st generation MINI in general. There is nothing unique about headunit fitment for R52. Fitment for R50, R53, and R52 are all the same.
Second, why do you say there isn't enough room for a pop-up screen? It should work if it's single DIN size, and it has been done many times.

Because that's what Crutchfield told me. The instrument bezel sticks out an inch and three quarters from the radio bezel.
