So I added one of those android head units that replaces the speedo and I want to add a back up camera. I found one that looks like it goes in the spot of the license plate light of a BMW and was wondering if the ones for the r56/r58 were the same as the ones on some of the BMW's.

That said, spend a little time on RealOEM.com. You can find parts and check interchangeably with other BMW models.

Here is the reverse camera for the F56:

There were a lot of revisions of that cam (who knows why). Most if not all are also used on a bunch of BMWs as well.

You mention R56/58. Neither model had a factory backup camera option, just PDC distance warning:
