MK3 is CD only. If you have a DVD unit, it is MK4.

The failing part is usually the laser head. If you are handy with electronics, you can replace it cheaply. Search the web and eBay for Sanyo SF-HD4.

You have an MK4. You didn't find an MK3 DVD drive because there is no such thing.

rkw, I have a MK3 CD drive that no longer reads discs. Do you happen to know the part model of the laser for the MK3 CD drive?

No, I don't happen to know but you will get an answer if you Google "BMW MK3 laser".

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I asked because an hour of googling did not yield a part number.

I only located a few overseas websites selling the mk3 laser for $50 or more - but none listed the part number.

I also found other people asking the same question on other forums, with no useful replies.

I did find a seller on eBay with listings for what appears to be the right laser for $25 though.
