Advice on aftermarket radio
Hi,
I am new to the forum but have been reading for a little while.
Just purchased an 09 R55 in December and absolutely love it. I have taken it to a great shop in the area (http://www.kinetechmotorwerkes.com/) and have done some maintenance.
Anyhow, about a month or so ago my radio completely died. It doesn't light up nor work.
Now I am contemplating one of 3 options:
1. Purchase a reman stock radio
http://parts.miniofkennesaw.com/prod...wd=&origin=pla
2. Purchase a single din radio with motorized screen
3. Purchase a double din radio with screen
I have a few questions:
1. Any major disadvantage to not keeping the stock radio? I know the car can be programmed without it, but I am still unsure.
2. I really like the double din option, but I am afraid it might be too low to be useful while driving. I would like to be able to use navigation from my android phone on the screen and also control things like Pandora and the like.
3. Are there any motorized screen options that can safely clear the tachometer housing?
If anyone has any suggestions/recommendations based on their experience I'd love to hear it.
Thanks

My stock radio was also broken so I replaced it with a double din, which looks great and everyone that sees is compliments it.
1) I am now mid fight with the dealership who wants to void my maintenance warranty due to the fact that they cannot update my software. My rear tail light has melted into the housing, which the dealer blames on the new radio. I am second guessing the aftermarket radio.
2) it is lower. Cannot fight that. The only thing that is too low are the window buttons.
3)IMO a single din looks cheap

I think what a2oc means is above the glove box there is a secret compartment that you push and it pops open. It is the size of a single din
The dealer ended up honoring my warranty but it's a good thing to keep in mind that if you don't keep the factory radio installed somewhere in the Mini that it will lose communication with the dealer and won't be able to recover software updates.
