AirPlay for your car

Hi everyone,

After testing a bunch of different bluetooth devices I never found one I was truly happy with. Last week I found this:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L26YDA4/ref=pe_385040_30332200_TE_item

An AirPlay device that you can use instead of Bluetooth. It is mostly geared towards Apple devices but I know Android devices can stream to Airplay devices as well.

I received it today and it sounds great, no compression whatsoever. , it does lag like a second or two but that's because it is buffering.

If anyone is interested, Amazon has this code which takes $7 off 7NTWFHB7.

Just wanted to let you all know.

Will this let you stream music from music streaming services like pandora, iTunes radio, etc.? EDIT - Yes it will.

Anyone know how much data those services use on an hourly basis?

Yep, pretty much anything that plays audio has AirPlay support on iOS.

According to this page:

FREE EDITION
The free edition of Pandora can stream music over the Web at a bitrate of 128 Kpbs or 57.6MB per hour. This could mount up to a significant usage each month. For example, if you listed to Pandora for one hour each weekday while commuting, you would use at least 1.1GB over a month containing 20 workdays. This usage alone would put you over the limit on some data plans.

CELLULAR EDITION
Although 128 Kbps is the default rate of Wi-Fi, Pandora's iPhone app allows you to choose between 64 Kbps and 128 Kbps when using a cellular connection. The default setting is 64 Kbps. This halves the data use to 28.8MB per hour. In our 1 hour per day for 20 days per month example, data use would reduce to just over 500MB.

Thanks. I've been debating about activating the factory satellite radio (~$500 including the first year). I could do this, get better music selection, up my data plan from 1GB to 2GB and still come out way ahead.

I do use airplay via an airport express exclusively in the house for music. I just read about how you can modify an airport express to get power via a usb port/cigarette lighter, but this is cheaper and easier.

I contemplated activating my factory satellite, but getting an outboard SiriusXM receiver gets you more stations, thus more variety.

I called SiriusXM @ 866-635-2349 and received the 5 mo. select pkg for $20 back in February. I called a few days ago before the promo pricing expired and asked for the same deal which was honored with zero hassle from the rep. Some people get 5 mo. for $25, or 1 yr. for $77. Activation fee should be waived. If you get hassled tell them you'll stream Pandora if they won't cut you a deal. If you don't get a good deal hang up and call back.

Just for grins, I streamed iTunes Radio through Aux Jack (~20MB data in ~30 minutes), but holy crappy sound, does the Bluetooth or Airplay sound this bad?
