Antenna base connector

Not particularly happy with my AM reception, with the headliner off to address other matters, I decided to inspect the antenna base. It seemed that there might be an opportunity to better insert the cable into the base. That was a mistake as my pushing and pulling busted the black jacket seen in the photo below. The cable is spring-loaded, slides into this black jacket and locks it into place. With it broke now, when the cable is inserted, the spring pushed it back out. From poor AM to none, lol...

Looks like a new base is one option, but not ideal. I'm thinking of removing the spring at the end of the cable, and see if I can secure it another way.

If I cannot make it work, might there be other bases worthy of consideration?

Thanks much.
