Factory installed iPod integration adapter stopped working!? Help?

Hi everyone, I've a 2005 Mini Cooper S (R53). It's my baby. When I got it, I had gotten the iPod adapter thingy installed. Pretty sure it's called the iPod integration adapter. Whatever it's called, it decided to stop working.

....Actually, I'm not sure if it's the adapter thingy that stopped working or if it's something to do with my iPhone....

Now, I am at a loss of what to do. Here's the skinny:
  1. The cord, since it was factory or dealership installed, goes thru the glovebox and the plug reaches to the cup holder.
  2. Up until recently, it was working like a charm. I had my MINI1 - MINI5 playlists on my iPhone 4S; I could listen to whatever song I wanted; it could shuffle, repeat, do all the stuff it had been doing for the past 7.5 years. The only downside was that it would not charge my iPhone / iPod touch. Whatever. Not a big deal really.
  3. Since the cord could only reach to the cup holder, sometimes my iPhone would slip out and dangle / fall / remove itself from the connector. (Problem?)
  4. Feels like whenever I update my playlist, it stops working. KEY POINT: My SONGZA app works fine and plays thru my speakers! (Problem?)

So there you have it. Those are the "clues." I'd really like to get my iPhone to play my music thru the speakers again. I love Songza (it's like Pandora but music chosen by moods. Awesome. /endorsement), but I love my songs better.

Is it my iPod connector that's gone shoddy? Is it my iPhone's syncing that has caused a weird "anti" iTunes-to-MINI thing that is seemingly temperamental? I have no idea. Any help on this would be super awesome.

..........Along the lines, if I wanted to remove the old iPod interface thing and install another one, people have suggested DICE or the GTA one. Would it be possible and/or easy to do? I also have the under-the-steering-wheel-wallet-holder thing, so I'm not sure how the GTA one would do. I'm also a nub with technical terms and prowess if you haven't guessed already.

OK, so just as an update, it seems like it's my iPhone and not my iPod interface thingy. Seems like every other time I plug my phone to charge with my computer and/or sync, then it doesn't connect very well with my iPod interface in the car. :(

If anyone comes looking around for more info, at the mo, my iPhone is running iOS6. Whoops, and it's an iPhone 4, not 4S.

Might be the connector on the iPhone too. Maybe it's dusty or even rusty.
