Navigation & Audio Intermittent front speakers
Intermittent front speakers
Hi all...
Just picked up a 2006 MCS and it's great, but I noticed that the audio was kind of muffled. I didn't think much of it, but the other day the passenger door speakers suddenly got very clear. By "got very clear" I really mean "started working" - and at some point, they stopped working again. Not related to potholes or anything that I could immediately determine. Realizing what happened, I played with the fader, and none of my front speakers are getting audio most of the time. Sometimes the passenger speakers work, but that's it.
The car's probably still under warranty from the dealership that I bought it from, but frankly it's a bit of a hike and it would be inconvenient to leave it with them, considering it's audio and in my experience, audio's pretty straightforward. Famous last words?
The only other thread I found on this site about a similar problem stated that "the dealer replaced the speakers and this fixed the problem." Granted this is the first MINI I've dealt with, but my intuition would be that it's not the speaker but the connection in the back of the head unit.
Before I choose between taking off the door panels and taking apart the center console - does anyone else have any experience with the front speakers going out?
Thanks!

Hi Leviathant, and welcome to NAM.
This is the 2nd gen Audio forums and with a 2006 you have a 1st gen MINI so you will get better answers in the 1st gen audio forums here https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-and-audio-14/
The systems are very different.

Holy crap, what a rookie mistake. I must have had too many tabs open when I started this thread, sorry about that. I would appreciate it if a mod could move this to the appropriate forum.
Well, even though I reported my own post, no one moved it, so having fixed the problem, I'll just reply here, because I hate when I'm searching for an issue and I come across a thread that matches exactly my problem, and it's long dead.
It turned out to be pretty simple. After reading up on how to pull the stock stereo out, I popped everything open, and found clipped ends from a mini-USB cable and some kind of power connector, obvious signs that some modification had been done in the past. Pulling the stereo out, I pushed on the connector and the front speakers responded. The sub-harness in the top-left of the main harness had at some point been removed and then replaced, but whoever did the replacing didn't snap it all the way back in.
Pretty easy fix. It's funny, the other thread I found with the same problem had taken the car to the dealer, who told them that the problem was fixed by replacing the speakers. I'll bet they just reseated the connector as well.
