Upgrading advice need 2002 Cooper

Hi

I wish to upgrade the speaker system. I want to get a HK parts but the wiring loom require is costly. But I'm looking at a component kit for the front and new 6x9 for the rear. *I wish to fit an amp in the boot (like the HK).

Can anyone recommend what items to get. Wiring kits that are available so you don't have to slice wires.

The front from what I know are 5.25 with tweeters. So would a component set work well? and for the rears 6x9's any good makes to look out for?
Amps don't have a clue about these! 4ch 2ch???? Please help.

I don't want to turn my car into some base machine just to impove on the standard kit, which is keep away not under seats etc!!!

Please help,

Thanks all
Nathan

Nathan,

There are so many options you have with gear, and what to select. Also having a budget in mind helps.

Figure out your objectives, and listening habits. What kind of music do you like, how loud, things like that.

Hybrid audio makes some fine speakers, especially for the money. You can go as big as 6.5's up front with some modification, otherwise stick with 5.25's.

For the 6x9's, CDT makes some descent mid bass drivers that drop in, and will give you improved bass response, though nothing super deep (You want that, i suggest a sub box in the boot). If you want a straight forward bump in sound, go with a nice pair of co-ax 6x9's.

All this is going to need some good power. ARC Audio makes some nice small amps, HELIX has a few low profile amps also. If you can get your hands on an old Genesis, they are really awesome amps.

With an r50, your going to need sound isolating material, rather liberally through out the car.

Hope this helps,

D

Hi

Thanks for your reply. Your right I should put my budget! I'm looking at about £200.00 max.

To keep the costs down, would replacement speakers be enough to make a difference? Id like to keep the speakers all the same make.
How would these be?

The front:

And the backs:

Would these make a diffance, lowder and some base.

If really needed an amp looking at:

Would this fit in the rear of the car down the side like the HK amp?
Are there any good guides to help fit these in a mini.

Thanks
Nat

Thanks all

To keep costs down, replace the headunit first, that will make some difference since the factory HU is underpowering. Then replace the speakers. In my research alot of people went with polk speakers all around. 5 1/4 components in the front but you can also use a 6 1/2. Which will give you a tad more mid-bass in the front. The rears are 6x9s

Then if that still is not what you are looking for then add an amp. I recommend a 2 channel for the front components and leave the 6x9's powered by the HU.

Thanks for the reply.

I really want to keep the car standard looking from the outside since it is such a good original standard car. So the headuit will have to stay.

Would the speakers above alone make any difference? Or would an amp be needed?

Thanks

Thanks for the tip about the fronts will upgrade to this size.

Do I need to worry about the depth of the speakers to fit in the locations?

Thanks

Mounting depth will not be an issue for the most part, with either size component in the door.

Also agree, if you are keeping the stock head unit, get a descent 2 ch amp to power your fronts. You may also need a good line converter or processing piece to clean the signal out from your deck:
