Upper Speaker

I have a 2008 Clubman with the base radio system. The lack of highs is my main disappointment with the system.

In reading over the threads, I am considering replacing just the uppers with a an efficient 2 way (say a Polk 351 series). My thinking is by starting with the main issue, I can judge if the rest of the system cuts it with the improvement of the better highs before just ripping out all four speakers. Like others, I won't be tackling the rears.

My questions are:

1) Can I pop the covers off the uppers without pulling the door cover that hides the lower?
2) General thoughts on my approach?

Thanks!
Bullet

1) Can I pop the covers off the uppers without pulling the door cover that hides the lower? Yes you can, and very easy to do it too. Switch on the drivers door gets in the way just a bit, but pop it up from the mounting hole with a butter knife and unplug it (or leave it attached and tape it out of the way).

2) General thoughts on my approach? I personally think nothing wrong with the approach. A change to a two way there adds the treble you're after.

I have the base system in my 2010 R56, and I added Polks to mine with incredible results.I have the DXi 650s in the lower door, and DXi350s in the upper portion. Added a JVC CS-BB2 powered sub in the back, and the sound out of my base system perfectly fine for me now...a difference of night and day.

Did you have to do any mods to fit the 350s in the door? Crutchfield keeps trying to tell me they won't fit.

No mods, just pilot holes in the plastic for mounting (PMd you). The Polks fit just fine, but the 3.5s are ever so slightly smaller (overall diameter) than OEM.

BTW, I picked up my DXi 350s at Best Buy ($60.00) along with my DXi 650s. I believe that's the same price as Crutchfield, and you can have em now. And...if you don't like how they fit, you can take them back without a shipping hassle. but I'm telling ya, they fit.

Got the PM, thank you very much!

I got lucky this morning and snagged an open box of 350s off eBay for $20! Can't complain about that!

I'm going to do the channel swap this weekend, then the uppers when they arrive. Then, I'm going to force myself to listen and evaluate for a month before I think about the lowers or anything else (the roof rack has to work in here somewhere, too)!!
