Cheap Alternative to $40 MINI Aux Audio Jack

Anyone tried installing a standard 3.5mm stereo jack for the AUX input?

I don't see why something like this wouldn't work:

$1.55 + S&H versus $20-$40

Hell, I'm sure I could rip one out of some old electronics that I already own.

I am sure all it requires is getting the right connections to the back of the auxillary jack of the radio and fabricating some kind of connector. Not sure its worth the time since installing the jack takes all of 5 minutes.

you arent paying for the actual jack you're paying for the connector on the back side of the head unit.

the connector isn't run of the mill, it's specific to the MINI.

so yes, getting an aux jack IS cheap but finding a way to connect it and communicate with the head unit is the other $30

People have wired their own aux input, and it is described in a thread somewhere in this forum. You'll need to connect 3 wires to pins at the back of the radio. It's hard to search for information on this forum, but you'll find it if you're persistent.

If you're on a budget, it will save you money to make your own, but as a matter of convenience it isn't a waste to get the OEM jack. The OEM cable is plug and play and if you don't have large hands it is even possible to install in minutes without removing the headunit.

My sister convinced me to buy her 2003 Mini and I was really impressed with the car, comparing it to my Z3 Roadster in handling and quality...but it lacks two things, an aux plug for Ipod and a decent cup holder that would hold a normal covered beverage. What suggestions do you have since you have an 03?
