Best settings for iPod/USB

Not sure if this worth a new thread, but here goes:

I have the factory installed bluetooth/iPod setup, standard stereo boost CD. I have had my Mini since early October, but until this past weekend on a long trip, had not really tried using my iPod in it.

It sounded horrible. CD's sound fine, but the iPod was distorted at any volume level. After searching thru many threads and posts, and reading some informative posts, I realized the issue may be with (1) the iPod settings, (2) the "external audio devices" settings on the Mini system and (3) the "iPod volume settings" under usb.aduio interface on the Mini system. It also helps to go back and read all the instructions carefully (duh!).

Now there are plenty of posts about how to replace the speakers, the head unit, etc., but I want to get the initial settings right before I start up that road.

But reading all instructions only tells me how to set the levels, not what the best combination of levels may be. Other wise it seems to be trial and error.

So has anyone put together (or hope beyond hope that Mini did this) the "best practices" guide to setting up the iPod on the Mini? If it does not exist, might be a sticky candidate.

There is really only one setting that you need to worry about and that is the iPod Volume Setting. That is if you are using the standard Mini Supplied "Y-Cable" I have mine set to 3. That is mid scale but i find if it run it up anymore than that i get very distorted sound and any less than that the level is very low and with the windows open i can not hear it.

On the other hand if you are not using the Mini Supplied "Y-Cable" but using a line from your headphone jack to the Mini AUX input then go get the "Y-Cable" there is no way to make the headphone jack to aux in sound good.

I don't have the newer Ycable interface, only the Aux-in on my Mini. I use a docking wire, not the headphone jack on the iPod, which sounds a lot better. The iPod volume makes no difference, but the EQ settings do. Mine sounds best with the Dance EQ setting. You can try the others of course.
