Problem with my new Garmin Nuvi 660,defective?

After updating the maps to 2009 from Garmin's website and heading off on my long drive from Florida to Minnesota I noticed that my Garmin Nuvi 660 would freeze up and stopped working and would have to reboot it several times when the map stopped scrolling. Then when I arrived at the destination it was directing me to across the street even though I had the correct address inputed!! Lets just say I got lost several times while driving in unfamiliar areas there too using my GPS.Then the Garmin Lock wouldn't accept my password and directed me back to my safe location which was in FLORIDA!! Fortunately I somehow managed to get it unlocked to use again.Phew.

The trip back was even worse as it would freeze up at least a dozen more times and had me detour on to a pay toll road when it recalculated when I missed my turn.Argh!!

Has anyone else experienced similiar problems as described above with their Garmin Nuvi 660? Should I just exchange it for a new one or just get a different model?

Thanks.

Did you try resetting it with the button on the back? The address problem (being on the wrong side of the street) is typical for most GPS. Sometimes they have the addresses in the right place, sometimes they don't.

The 660 has avoidances you can set. If I remember right, one of them is to avoid toll roads. Also make sure you have the right vehicle type set.

1.Yes.

2.Oh okay.Although my former Garmin StreetPilot c340 took me right to the correct address last year.Maybe because of the different software used between the 2?

3.Avoidance was set to on but put me on the toll road anyway when it recalculated.

For #1, you could have a bad one. Try Garmin's tech support. If it's really locking up that much, they will more than likely want you to mail it to them.

Garmin didn't always use Navteq data so maybe that is the address location difference. Or just the fact that "upgrades" aren't always an "upgrade".

Sometimes it will still pick a toll road. My 660 does the same thing once in a while. I don't have any toll roads near me though to verify if the avoidance is really working. I know the u-turn avoidance setting works.

^^Thanks Minidrivr.

But today I decided to return the Garmin Nuvi 660 which was within the 30 return policy from where I bought it for a full refund. It seems that the 2 that I had bought from CompUSA the Nuvi 360 and Nuvi 660 have both been defective.

Anyway today I ordered a Garmin Nuvi 760 which is now on sale from Costco which is the same price as the Garmin Nuvi 660 that I had bought plus they have a no set time limit for returns there. It will arrive sometime early next week.

Very nice. The 760 has some nice additional features, like route planning!
