I recently bought an 03 Cooper S. I decided to get the navigation system. My car has the new DVD based system. I live in St. Louis. The system has worked pretty well. It is sometimes off but I am generally pleased with it. I decided to get the system because I am moving to Columbia, MO for grad. school in the fall. I figured it would help me find things since I am not familure with the area. I took my car down to Columbia for the first time last weekend, and almost everywhere I went, the navigation would stop, saying "you are not on a digital route and further guidance could not be completed" or something to that effect. The computer still had the food places and stuff in it, but it couldn't guide me to them. I am very frustrated because my dealer told me that it would work. I told them the reason i was getting the system and that I was moving to Columbia. I would not have been upset, but the reason I spent the extra $1700 was so it would help me in Columbia, and now it doesn't work. I was wondering if anyone had any advice. Thanks for reading.

Pull the CD out and check if it has a Region coding. It may be DVD but if it's still a CD then you will need to get the DVD version of the maps.

Even when operating in a CD's region, I find that if it's a populous area, you have great coverage, but if it's out in the sticks, it's iffy at best. Big cities and the surrounding areas are not a problem.

I will pull the DVD out tonight. How do I tell if it has the DVD coding or the CD coding? Sorry I'm confused. Columbia is a decent sized city. It has 80,000 people and a huge university. I was also in Hermann, MO which is in the middle of nowhere and the GPS worked fine. Thanks for your help.

jonathan - columbia isn't large enough to justify coverage. my last car (acura TL with nav) and my mini both didn't cover columbia. (i picked up the car in Kansas City so I have the map for that region although I live in AZ). I doubt even the DVD upgrade will have it. I went to school in Lawrence, KS (KU) and the pop there was touching 100K but it wasn't covered either. A college town will not justify coverage. The population density needs to be higher.

sorry to tell you this.

haf
