Need Honest Opinions on Polk Audio

Just picked up a used 2005 MCS that originally came with HK

If anyone traded in their black 05MCS at a Jaguar dealer in Waukesha forgive anything I may say about you regarding the state you left the audio in. But honestly what you did should get you slapped.

I got the car with a Pioneer AVIC N2 installed.
The touch screen drive gears are jacked up so opening and closing the screen needs manual assistance not a major issue since the unit is great. The unit apparently came with an xm subscription too.

Now for the bad.
Passenger side tweeter is a Boston unit that was cut and spliced in place and is dented badly.
Not sure the drivers side (stock HK for some reason) even works.
Passenger side mid sounds like crap with any amount of bass.
Driver side is dead.
I have yet to pull the door panels to see what awaits in the location of the mids.
Rear speakers: Well I think they might be there but if they are they don't work.
There is a godawful ugly dial to control the sub (not traded in with car) screwed to the dash (but it goes to 12!)
The access panel below the dash where some of us put our aux inputs won't even click into place because of a nest of tangled wires.
Car appears to be wired for 2 amps and a sub. One amp and the sub apparently were kept.
The remaining amp is a memphis (or a knockoff) without any markings as to model, output, anything. Its still plugged in and powered. The cables for the other amp are still powered too apparently.

My plan:
Keep the head unit and replace the missing Nav DVDs (thanks again jackazz)
Replace all speakers and if necessary rewire the entire car.
I will likely replace the amp with something I know the specs of.

What I would like an opinion on is my choice of speakers. I know my ear is the best judge but if anyone has had experience with these good or bad let me know.

Front doors:
Polk 2007 db Series db6501
Rear:
Polk 2007 db Series db691
Sub:
Single Polk db Series db104 (single voice coil 4 ohm 10")

The sub got me off in the Polk direction. I have heard the 2007 db series component fronts and the 6x9 and like them a lot. It helped that I picked up the sub for $68 because it is last years model.

Also any recommendations for a good amp that will drive my selections without breaking the bank. The Memphis may stay but I'd like to know other options.

Thanks in advance.

I have Polk 6500 in the front and 690's in the rear with a 10" Sub.

I have an Alpine 4 x 75 watt amp in the rear with a cheap 300 watt amp to run the sub. I plan to upgrade the sub amp in the future.

I also have an Alpine 9887 head unit.

The people who have heard it stay it sounds pretty good based on how much I spent. It sounds better than the other small cars I have heard.

It sounds much, much better than stock, there is no comparison.

If I had it to do over again I would have gone with the Momo's up front as they have better bass and they aren't that much more. I will probably do that in the future.

Spend your money on the front speakers, the rears are just fill.

I also put the tweeters that came with the 6500's in the factory tweeter's location.

I also have a lot of sound deadner in the car.

This is the location of the Polk forum. If you have any questions, you can usually get them answered there.

Polk Audio

This is what I went with: Panasonic headunit 139.00
Polk MOMO fronts 159.00
Polk MOMO full range rears 75.00
Alpine PDX-4.150 amp 375.00
Alpine PDX-2.150 amp 260.00
Bazooka 10" Sub 67.00

My audio guy told me I had way to much power for my little car. But what the hell, it's better to have to much than to little. Got everything off of ebay just wait for some deals to come along

Cool another happy Polk user.

I think I'll stick with the db series the momos are nicer but I'm on a ramen budget as it is. Total spent blacking out my wifes car before the areo grille and tints was under $90 and the grille and tints were the last 2 things other than the stripes.

I define frugal.

I got a good deal on last years polks for $99=), but was wondering...

They were discontinued from 07, DB5250 model number. They come with their own crossover. So I imagine I should use the crossover unless it is fine to just connect the stock wires to the tweeter and to the mid and use the existing crossover if there is one? I have an 03 non S that didn't have the nice stock setup. If I don't need to use the crossover I would rather not try to find a place to put it in the doors.
