2006 stock radio
Ok, I know this has been covered in lots of threads, but I am electronically challenged and ask that you bare with me. I just got an '06 cooper w/stock setup. What I have gotten from the threads is easiest thing to do is upgrade speakers and add amp. I went to a couple of places to inquire and well I think they saw me coming. All I want is something with more clarity (seems to be a theme on the boards) and actually sounds good with decent bass when needed--not something to wake up the neighbors or lots of equipment taking up my boot space. I feel stupid because I have NO idea what these guys are talking about (built in crossovers vs not built in, etc), and dont want to be taken advantage of. I did like the polk db 6501 sound though.
Here are my questions...1) is replacing the head unit really that much of an added benefit for someone not looking to wake up the neighbors--if yes, should I be nervous having someone take apart my mini to do it; and 2)can someone please tell me what I need to tell this guys at the install place. For ex: get the polk db 6501 6x9, infinity (or whichever brand) tweeter, get this size amp and have them install it (insert location), have this crossover or dont, etc. I just want something that is going to sound a lot better than what I have now. Budget is no more than $400.
I just fell like they see some dumb chick and trying to rake me over the coils.
Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom.

I am curious about this as well. Most amplifiers need to have a pre-amplified input, this normally requires a line converter. On VWs you can tap into a pre-amp output at the back of the radio, eliminating the need for line converters. Maybe the Mini stereo is the same way.
I used the VW pre-amp outputs and a 6 channel amp in my previous car. While some audiophiles would cringe at using a stock head unit I just think the majority of aftermarket units stick out like a sore thumb. It is possible but maybe some mini experts can chime in with better information.

If you don't have the Harmon/Kardon system, consider the OEM DPSM stereo upgrade. It isn't cheap, but it's an excellent package that combines very clear sound, plenty of volume, no additional interior space, total integration with your factory systems, and full warranty coverage as part of your factory warranty (provided installed by a dealer).
Actually, I just realized that you stated the budget is no more than $400. Nevermind, sorry!

well you try my way of doing it. Maybe not my exact way but maybe the idea.
I kept the stock head-unit (stock appearance), and added the level line converter.
Then I installed the MinSpeed Rear Seat Delete and screwed the amp right to the piece that covers the "rear seat"

I used the JL M430 AMP and the Focal 690 CA1 Speakers. I left the front speakers stock, using the HPF (High Pass Filter, exactly as it sounds), to be sure I would not blow them. It sounds AMAZING!!! When I take my friends ask where I hid the sub, they don't believe me.
