Electrical Hookup of Portable Garmin GPS - OEM Kit vs Other Options

I understand that the MINI branded mounting kit for the Garmin Nuvi 360 has 4 leads that plug somewhere into the OEM wiring harness, and that some sort of software update is done to the Mini's computer to get the device to play well with the MINI.

Does anybody understand what functionality is achieved by this setup vs. a simple hardwired power connection to the GPS?

Are there methods to achieving the same electrical functionality as the MINI mounting kit without having to purchase the whole kit from the dealer? I plan to use a Kuda mount for locating my GPS unit (a Nuvi 660) and am only concerned about the electrical side of the installation at the moment.

Thanks much!

Alan

Check this post on Motoringfile.com - it has the retrofit information as well as all the steps to install the MINI OEM Nuvi part.
