I'm not that familiar with parts, what is that? Catch fire?

Did it toast the MINI or just the part?

Damn.... Fuel pump?

Getting it out is half the work. Now take it to Schomp and see what they will do about it. If they say nothing then get a rebuilt and join us for the Castle to Castle Run - July 19th.

Yeah, I caught that on his other thread. PSP is better than fuel, he would have toasted the MINI with that much heat & gas.

Were the PSP problems in the early MINIs, if so maybe Schomp can do something even if out of warranty.

Good luck with it.

Wow that is one hell of a constant turn to fry that puppy!
Here is a link to power steering issues in the UK, they even have a hotline for it.

Good luck Bryan and let me know if I can help at all. I recommend talking to Devon at Schomp first.

My PSP went out during MOTD-5 & was barely under warranty yet. It failed going into a corner on the Dragon & was soooo hard to steer that I almost over shot the curve. Then it came back on (electric) just as unexpectedly & I nearly went off the road to the inside.

The Mini Dealer (Century Mini/BMW) Service Dept in Greenville SC told me that the pumps usually fail do to the fan stalling from sand / pebbles & then the pump over heats. Many fail after driving on beaches, my car was originally from FL. They replaced my pump & fan both.

In the web link Rich provided above, the girl mentioned being unable to turn the steering wheel. I could steer mine but it took every ounce of strength I had!!! I wonder if there is not a pending crash liability if a weak person had a PSP fail in the wrong place/time.

I drove into Greenville for repairs but could hardly make a Highway ramp curve do to how hard it was to steer. Century Mini had parts & Mechanic waiting on me. The mechanic said that that was the one main weakness of the Mini in his opinion.

Cenk, who is Devon? I am out of warranty but I would like to talk to someone
"official". From what I've researched this is a huge deal. Surprised this is not a recall.

Mike,
Got your e-mail on BBA and was looking into them, maybe the way I go.

I had no warnings of failure, parked the car was fine, came back out no power steering. Fan was locked, fluid puked, pump was crispy critter. I think it was amazing it didn't burn to the ground.

Bryan

These things are not cheap, at this one website the low end is $191, but look at this a ZF (performance gearboxs) for $$$

Oh and do not go thru minimania, wow they want over $600 for theirs!
Moss MINI has a factory upgrade for getting more air to the PSP
http://www.mossmini.com/Shop/ViewPro...eIndexID=59580 only $79.

Thanks! I'm just wanting to find out what my next move should be. Talking with Schomp is just to keep the ball rolling. Not holding my breath.

Back up!

New pump, fan, rebuilt ps hose, wire harness, and while I was there; put a new belt, belt tensioner, and rebuilt the idler pulley.

All in all it was a huge PITA.
