We Need A Ride On June 21 - Welcome Back Summer
Bbbut, she touched me 1st....
Any hew, since there is a long ride the weekend prior, how about a SSSS (& birthday) celebration picnic at Christy Canyon State Park South of Frank Town off Hwy 83.
There once was a dam there that broke & flooded Denver (1930ish ?) There's a hiking trail from picnic areas to the dam(n) break place. Very interesting place to explore.

Hi guys,
Just happen to come across a thread talking about the drives in Colorado from Bimmerforums (I am the original owner of a E30 M3) and want to share it with everyone:
Pete's Choice Colorado Roads
i just haven't seen a thread like this in this particular local forum yet. basically lets list up a bunch of favorite Colorado roads. ...we are a truely blessed state when it comes to this topic! everything on my list is no less than 2 miles of entertainment. some of these i haven't been on in a few years, but they left some decent lasting impressions. I know with gas prices how they are this list seems a little obsurd, but hey, it's what i love about my selected hobby and what my state has to offer up for further enjoyment of it.
in alphabetical order (ranked order was just too difficult to decide),
my TOP 15 as of May08:
O - Black Canyon of the Gunnison (North Rim - 92)[/color]
(very twisty, rather smooth, for the most part all tight, not much for straights, decent altitude change but not extreme, pretty sweet views, if your planning a trip to see the Grand Canyon do this one first, they are both just holes in the ground and this one's alot closer to Denver with just as much if not more outdoor recreation in the Gunnison Valley than the Grand Canyon has to offer)
O - Clear Creek Canyon
(favorite hot-spot for Colorado Sport Bike Club informal cruises - CanyonRuns, can be linked to other canyon roads to make a large loop)
O - Cottonwood Pass
(Killer drive in the Fall, especially when starting eastbound with Taylor Canyon, moderate altitude change, gear selection not too heavily important but ideal, climbing the East side from Buena Vista there are some crisp hairpins, east side all paved up until the summit, West side down to Taylor Reservoir is oiled dirt, Not for heavy spring rates, but damn fun hairpins and sweepers, would make an awesome Rally course if a club was interested in sponsoring such an event, CLOSED during the winter)
O - Deckers Road, South
(Excellent back road for turning that relaxing friday commute from the west side of 470/golden to the west side of the Springs into nirvana, Low to Moderate altitude changes, High deer and other wildlife possible so keep on your toes, road offers a large diversity from straights to sweeps to hairpins down in the thick of good ol Rocky Mountain vegitation)
O - Deer Creak Road
(Twisty, unimpressive altitude change is still moderate, nice river waterfalls along the side, relatively smooth, generally too much traffic so hit it at odd hours)
O - Fall River Road
(9-10 miles of entertainment right next door to Idaho Springs off of i70, Moderate altitude change, sweet if you have property up there or some type of 4wd rock crawler to go molest Yankee Hill with)
O - Golden Gate Canyon Road
(6thAVE connecting golden to i70, excellent detour if i70 is backed up, heavily traveled, odd hours are best)
O - HW114
(highly diversified road, a little bit of everthing except for traffic. watch for deer. Some rather "hippie" Hot Springs over by the East end near Salida)
O - HW24 (section west of Manitou Springs)
(if you head out to woodland park park from the springs often, you know what i'm talking about, a little fun, sorta feel like a kid in a go-kart carving up the canyon)
O - HW285 (between MM219 and Johnson Village)
(passed a camoflaged BMW 1series couple doing high altitude testing? once - very relaxingly fun sweeps and decent altitude variations, excellent view heading westbound, traffic can be annoying, but again, right place, right time. Eastbound is a fun little climb, makes a commute pass by like nothing)
O - Lookout Mountain Road
(decent to higher altitude change, backside and frontside so there is little backtracking, backside is more intense of an altitude change, coupled with a few sharp corners it is quite pleasant, not to mention the view of the city)
O - Monarch Pass (MM211 - MM192)
(West side of the pass has a preceptively higher atlitude change than the East side, Use your gears people, traffic is annoying beyond belief... only because it's such a blast that the out-of-stater or flatlander that is impeding your bliss really gets under your skin, going up there are two lanes, down only one lane with only a few passing zones offered, right place right time it's a hoot, especially if it's snowing like crazy and there is a decent snowpack on the road surface = pure bliss)
O - Oh My God Road
(about as scenic as you can get inbetween your stints of loosing money in Central City
)
O - Palmer Park (Great little playground right in CoSprings)
(lookout parking lot would really make an awesome CoSprings GTG location for 8 cars or less, very fun to frequent at odd hours, possible to "drive-thru" up one side and out the other for a fun little detour)
O - Taylor Canyon (between Almont & Taylor Reservior)
(If you love fishing, Almont as well as other sections of the Gunnison River are a MUST, gently twisting road, excellent RM folliage, a definate "have-to" during the Fall and Spring, Ohio Creek is better however connects to Dirt and Kebler is not as upkept as Cottonwood)
Summer'08 TO DRIVE List:
O - Black Canyon of the Gunnison (South Rim Drive)
O - Canyon City (West section of HW50)
O - Independence Pass Road (82)
O - HW149 (Lake City)
O - HW34 (Rocky Mountain National Park)
O - Pike Peak Toll Road - OIled Dirt, practically like pavement is what i've heard

Winning Prize Announcement
OK - After much deliberation I have decided on a prize for the selected ride...
In conjunction with another thread going on about a MINI5280 detailing get together, I will, your President, detail the MINI belonging to the winner of the Summer Solstice Ride (SSR) contest. I'm talking the whole 9 yards, top-to-bottom, front-to-back, inside & out. I will do said detail before MITM and on a weekend that is mutually agreeable.
This will be 12 to 14 hours of effort plus countless dollars in detailing product so make your entry a good one. I want PowerPoint presentations, production numbers, dancing bears and leprechauns, that's right leprechauns, I want leprechauns in your proposal for the SSR.
So come prepared with your presentation at the June 10th club meeting, wow the other members and persuade the judges and win big!
Leprechauns people!
Sign-up for the meeting on our calendar at: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...&day=2008-6-10

I see a need for a new thread in MINI5280 and the Rocky Mtn Forum
"Our Favorite Roads"
I will do an entry, or a few. It is a good idea, Michael, and it lets all contribute.
Suggestion: The website www.Colorado.com separates the State of Co into regions. We should do the same. In fact, I suggest that we ask our posters to include the following info:

- Name of road
- Location by Region
- Where to and Where from it goes
- Approx distance and time, and distance to get to from Denver
- Why you like it
- Notable stops along the way (ie scenery, historical, and eatery)

Thank you....
I am on the road this week in KS.
Yes, my Dragon pics are posted at
www.DragonTales.smugmug.com for you to enjoy. Prior years are there, too.
See Y'all Saturday.

Did I mention a full detail for submitting the selected ride (post #33)?
Heck - steal one from Michael's post, he can only use one of them.
Oh and I have a local source for dancing bears if anyone need it.

I have to admit Chuck that the prize is very tempting. That's one hell of a prize, and I don't know why other folks aren't jumping on it. Personally I'm trying to find a leprechaun to hold my cue cards, but no luck yet.
We'll see what comes available soon. Afterall, we've got till June meeting to get it all in order.

Since Mt. Evans may not be open today
all the way to the top, the ride about going up there, AM Sunrise and PM Sunset really speaks to me.
We all take our pics and put them together in the same gallery...for all to enjoy.
That guy had a good idea.

Well, I personally have not taken any of those rides before, so I really don't know much about them. I was thinking about picking a few interesting ones and test driving it and report back to you guys. But it seems something else always came up during the weekends. so far it's all talk and no sugar... but I will definitely be there on June 21st...
I think we should go up to Mt Evans!!!! We had a great time last week. It was beautiful but we all REALLY wanted to go all the way to the top. Maybe we could get some ideas when we're up there for something creative to do up there at midnight during MITM's??
Mt Evans!!!!
Mt Evans!!!!
Come to the meeting, watch the presentations and vote on your favorite.
Jonathan has been lobbying hard and has even tried to bribe the judge, the rest of the participants have some catching up to do.
Did Jonathan mention that the morning ride up would need to leave about 3:30 AM? Just throwing that out there.

Actually, the time needed
from the Stegosaurus lot is only :51 as that is what it took us to the mouth of Mt. Evans last Friday. Then, :49 more to go the last 13 miles and you are there. With one pit stop, that means allowing about 2 hrs to get up to the top should be right.
I guess that means that Chuck is right, yet again.

What would Summer Solstice be without CARHENGE!!! Just a thought. Alliance Nebraska is a long ways away.
Someday we CORN/5280 folks will make a trip there.

We could use a druid theme and get arrested by the Alliance police after dancing around Carhenge nekkid at sunrise.
Stonehenge, carhenge, how many kind of henges are there?
Come to our June 10th meeting, present your proposed ride and compete with the rest of them. I promise it will get serious consideration (especially if you bring a leprechaun and some waltzing llamas).
