R56 2007 Cooper S; Does it come standard with ABS?
2007 Cooper S; Does it come standard with ABS?
I'm doing my research on a 2007 Cooper S; Does it come with ABS standard? Or do I need to purchase the DSC package?
DSC sounds like a ABS package that adds computerized throttle adjustment. Right or wrong?
If the Cooper S comes with ABS, I will probably skip on the DSC... I'm fine with regular ABS.
Thanks!

ABS is standard. DSC is not so much about braking as it is about handling. Since it can react faster than a human, and can access individual wheels, it can accomplish what a driver cannot. It is unknown (to me at least) whether the MINI implementation of DSC is too aggressive (comes on too early) or only comes on when really needed (like the Porsche's version).
The pros and cons of DSC have been much debated here. You should check out the other thread. It seems that it is scheduled to become a government requirement in the future. It has been reported that insurance statistics show an actual reduction in accident rates with DSC-like systems, where ABS did not show much benefit in statistics.

DSC is $500 option and if you are a safe driver you're not likely going to make much use if it (functions like an electronic nanny to keep you from loosing control of your MINI).
If you like to drive like Mario Andretti then you'll likely turn off DSC and leave it off most of the time. If so then don't buy it.
If you have young drivers or multiple drivers for your MINI and you want some safety built in then DSC is good. Leave it on passively.
I have DSC and leave it on for daily driving and street use and turn it off for the track and for autocross. If my teenagers drive the MINI then DSC is good as far as I'm concerned.
Interesting: "DSC is not so much about braking as it is about handling. Since it can react faster than a human, and can access individual wheels,..."
Although my auto is a 2006 S, the DSC reacts so much faster than my human mind that it applies the brake on one front wheel when turning hard. See that? When turning hard - right in the apex of the turn! This happened three times to me. The first time was a surprising first time. Then I did the same thing to find out what made the auto hesitate and squat at the apex of a turn when the gas was applied and the steering wheel was yanked. The DSC worked the same every time. Damn thing is dangerous. It has been turned off every since. I don't need the kind of help that creates something hazardous that should NOT happen.

Since the 2007 is a major redesign, what are the chances that it is different in the R56?
