DIY Transmission Oil Change

With the excellent write up from agranger and the assist from kapps, I changed my transmission oil this weekend.

Of course I took a bunch of pictures and did a little write up about it.

Check it out, let me know what you think.

I know most people said their old transmission fluid was brownish red... mine was a gross black.

Plus there were little cruddies in the bottom of the bucket too. Ew.

After changing it, shifting is much smoother and glides much easier.

Nice write-up.
I did about the same thing with MTL and am very happy.

For anyone who wants MTL at a good price use MyOilShop.com and use the dealer code 675421 for a 10% discount. If you have to mail order redline this is one of the best places to go to.

(I am not part of the site, or a vendor for them. I have been using the discount for about 5 years and want to pass it along.)

A fine writeup!
Very good to emphasize 'budging'* the fill hole first.

*a new context for this word for me. I like it.

Thanks!

I was about to write the words, "crack open the fill plug"... but after further consideration and the ever-so-slight possibility of someone taking that too literally:impatient... I opted for "budge".

I believe in open-source communication, so please, use the word in that context as freely as you wish.

^^^ YOu know MINI claims that fluid to be able to go the "lifetime" of the car

Good write up,I'm thinking I'll be ready to do this in July the way I've been racking up miles. (Still on a 5k old Tranny right now though)

That's what I was thinking too

Who's lifetime? Mine or the transmissions. I suppose if your transmission fails due to the fluid, MINIUSA could always argue that it lasted the lifetime.... of the transmission.

Let me know if you want any help (or just an excuse to motor around afterwards)!
