R56 Engine work because of noise
Engine work because of noise
Hi there,
First of all, let me say hi to everybody as I am new to this forum. I've had my Mini Cooper S 2007 (Condor) for exactly one month. After reading some posts in this forum, I made an appointment with my dealer to have them check out the engine, which made a click clack sound. The dealer agreed that there is something wrong with the engine. I left it there in the morning, and in the afternoon was told that tomorrow they would work on the engine. I'm a little nervous as I don't know what to expect, what might be the problem and if this might create further problems down the road. Anybody have insights, anecdotes or suggestions regarding what might the problem?

Sounds like you got a "ticker"... read more here -> https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ghlight=ticker
i say dont let them touch it!! you have a warrenty on the car right? why not see how it drives for awhile, whats the hurry? does it drive ok? i am getting my 2007 next week and there is no way i would let the dealership bust open my engine unless it was having real problems. these are brand new engines and i would bet yours will be the fist any of those techs have taken apart. so drive it for awhile, we will learn after a year or so if the ticking on these engines is normal or a defect. if its normal your engine will be fine if its a defect you will get a new engine or can repair it then. GET YOUR CAR BACK FROM THE DEALER.
The fact that they will be opening the engine is what has me nervous. But, won't it also be under warranty if they do open the engine? Additionally, after 2500 miles, the service indicator is up to 18,000 miles. Last week it read 17,000 miles, its gone up 1,000 miles! I believe this is a computer glitch, but I am just afraid of doing any damage to my car. I spoke to one of the SA's and told me only a few people there were certified for 2007s, so that is why they had not done it sooner. I hope and pray to God everything will be okay. Thanks for your comments.
Mine has made the clacking sound since I first brought her home. I was told that it is NORMAL by my dealer and not to worry. So, I havent worried but have continued to listen. Nothing has changed. I no longer worry about it. I would be very hesitant to let my dealership work on my engine this early on. I suggest calling MINIUSA to get a second opinion or call my dealership, Global Imports MINI in Atlanta before proceeding. Good luck!
it is complelety normal for the service indicator to change. its changes depending on your day to day driving style. if you drive hard or short trips its will say you need service sooner, if you drive easy and on the freeway it will start to climb and make the service a longer interval. it is not a computer glitch!!!! like i said, if i were you i would call first thing in the morning and get your car back. hopfully they have not opened up your engine already.
I don't get it. What's the bid deal about having the mechanics work on the engine? Manufacturing mistakes happen. It sounds like MINIs are built by Elves and dealer mechanics are Orcs. What's the deal?

the big deal is that you just dont take apart a new engine just because it is making noise. especially a noise that other MINIs are also making. a noise that MINI claims is 100% normal. the problem is that these are brand new engines. the techs might be trained for them but their experience is limited because the engines are only a few months old. these engines are put together at the factory with specific specs and precision. by machines (even better than elves).
no these are not the same 1.6 engines as in the previous MINIs. these are different from the ground up.
im not saying never get engine work done, but i am saying it should be last resort. i had a 2004 MINI S and it had some transmission noise at 6000 miles. the dealer took it apart and it was never the same. i ended up selling the car a few months later.

First of all, no one here has heard your particular car. There's a normal ticking sound that comes from the injectors. Some (particularly on mini2) have reported a louder "clack" along the passenger side of the engine, which is not normal. Some have reported that the timing chain tensioner turned out to be faulty, and replacement solved their problem.
It's not like the dealer is going to completely disassemble your engine and look for a bad part. You're doing the right thing by letting them have a look.

DS is good with dirt. I park outside, and when it gets dusty, it looks gray. Of course with all the live oak pollen and spotty rain lately it's been dusted with chartreuse splotches, which don't look /too/ bad on the body, but on the black roof look horrible. If I'd gotten PW or MY, it'd look absolutely horrible.
Nope, completely different unit, not many common parts if any at all. The new unit was developed with PSA (Citroen / Peugeot) and is used in some of their cars with different tuning.
