R56 Panoramic Sunroof internal cover
Panoramic Sunroof internal cover
Hello everyone. New to the MCS Family. Picked up my 07 this past weekend. Well I must say it is a blast to drive the car, only thing I do not like so far is the heat that comes through this sunroof. I was thinking of putting a darker tint film on them to block the sun, but is there any other type of internal cover like other cars to have closed while the car is parked? Living in SFLA, it gets hot... Any help appreciated.
Yep, I got a set of those (gotta love ebay deals
)
Used them last month at AMVIV - amazing how hot the sun in in Vegas even when it's only 76 degrees out!
They work great, and roll up small enough to shove behind the seats when you're not using them.

My MA advised me that tinting the sunroof in Florida (I'm there too) can cause it to shatter. His advice was to NOT do it.
However, cooperflags.com has some great sunroof decals. I'm tempted to get a white perforated one just to make the white roof look consistent and provide a bit of shade.
I REALLY wonder if I can get the sunroof done in white, and then have the heliport decal put on top of it. Hmm...

I put a perforated sunrood decal on one MINI, but it lets it too much light, so I bought a nice hat and some strong sunglasses. On my other MINI, I installed a solid sunroof decal and, viola! No more worries whatsoever...no sun coming in...I can still use the sunroof, and there is no heat and sun glare!

My MA stands to make money off me getting my sunroof tinted. I doubt he's going to steer that away based on hearsay.
But, just to show I do actually know how to use the search function:

My MA says decals should have no problem.
My take on it is this: if people who professionally install tinting advise against it (at least in certain climates), then it's probably a fairly poor idea. If someone has gotten it done and never had a problem, great. Bravissimo! However, that doesn't make it a good/safe idea.
I would say declaring this issue to be untrue is irresponsible, and at the very least someone interested in getting the work done SHOULD read the threads and hear all sides of the debate. In the threads referenced above, at the very least the message I got from reading them was that there IS some risk, although small, and even less in cooler climates. Considering there are safer options (I've never been a fan of having safety glass raining down on me.), I'm going to pursue them. I plan to have my sunroof covered w/ a solid white decal from cooperflags.com if I decide the Florida sun is abusively hot inside the car.
Well dude, I'm in the hot Florida sun too....(farther south than you) and I have had the roof tinted for well over 1 year....The car is never garaged and it is tinted with 5% limo tint on the roof....
And I am happy to report No cracks,no shatters nothing...

just curious why would tint caused the glass on a sunroof to crack or break and not persay the hatch of an acura integra or toyota celica which have glass for the most part is facing upwards just like that of the sunroof, and i have never heard that you can't get that tinted? this is a question, playing a little devil's advocate.
i have no idea, i don't install them.
my point is simply this: when the people who make their money installing them refuse to do it, it's not based on hearsay or not wanting to. There's a good reason, and I would consider discounting it a poor idea.
Saying "I did it and nothing happened" as a rationale for installing the tint is like saying "I ate donuts for breakfast every morning and I suffered no ill effects." Maybe ya got lucky, maybe other factors allowed it to work for you, I dunno. But, for me, there's enough risks on the road that I don't need to add "Sunroof May shower glass upon you without warning" to my list of potential driving hazards. From the links I posted, i believe one of them discusses how ESPECIALLY the Limo tint can be riskier due to it being almost black and essentially absorbing more sunlight than the glass would by itself.
I am planning to get the www.stratmosphere.com product. It rolls up nicely and allows the flexiblity I think I'll want.
I have nothing further to say on this matter. Clearly your milage may vary, and as with most things on the highway, some are more tolerant of a higher risk factor than others. I'm just not in favor of discounting that risk when making a choice as to what to do regarding the sunroof nor advising others that no risk exists. My MA has no reason to lie, pass along misinformation, or turn away business... clearly my dealership feels it's not the right thing for its customers, and it's pretty rare to find someone turning down money because it's "the right thing to do."
