Simmons Makes it Two in a Row at USTCC Opener at Thunderhill
By Ryan Cristobal / USTCC Media Staff
Willows, CA -- The 2007 season of the Hankook United States Touring Car Championship started at the Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, California on March 10-11, 2007. Taking control and winning easily was Curt Simmons in the Cornwell Tools/Sunnyvale Dodge SRT-4. Second place went to Ali Arsham’s Gogogear.com/Konig Wheels Honda Civic Si. Third place was rookie Bob Scheer driving the Burbank Plating Mini Cooper S.
Simmons started the weekend in strong fashion with the quickest car in every session. Simmons won his first race at Las Vegas in 2006 in the last race of the season and was excited to score back-to-back wins after waiting a long time for a win. “If every race was like this it will be a great season,” Simmons said afterwards.
Arsham was another very excited driver. After sitting out the entire 2006 season, he started the season with mechanical issues and missed a lot of track time. “We had a lot of issues and were trying hard just to be in the race. The goal was just to finish the race, Arsham said enthusiastically. In fact, Arsham had his hands full after jumping to second place after the standing start. Arsham got a great start and found himself behind Simmons after the first turn. That didn’t last long though as Scheer’s Mini was soon past, reclaiming second place.
With Scheer in second place and Arsham in third place, you would figure that everything would be nice and quiet. But this is USTCC racing and it is anything but quiet. Andrew Gillis, driving his STWA Performance Ford Focus, easily made it past Arsham and then went on to pass Scheer’s Mini. Next thing you know the Focus was right behind the SRT-4. “I looked up and saw the Focus right behind me,” Said Simmons. Gillis, who was having mechanical problems during the weekend, was looking very strong. But eventually mechanical gremlins resurfaced slowing Gillis. First the Mini of Scheer went by and then the Honda of Arsham.
The big battle was still brewing as Arsham and Scheer were at it as they were lapping slower traffic. Arsham kept trying to make a pass but Scheer was not having any of it. With two laps to go, Scheer lost a lot of speed as he was lapping slower traffic and Arsham seized the opportunity and made the pass. Arsham held on to the position until the checkered flag.
With a Dodge in first, Honda in second and Mini in third, the series put three different manufacturers in the top three positions.

it's currently even lower. they brought it to the dyno, got it to 210, then with the software richened it up and got about 201. they wanted the engine to last the season..
Wow. That car is insanely fast for 200hp. How much does it weight? The orange/blue MINI pictured behind him ran with Randy Webb's car last year at the Vegas race in the unlimited class. Was Bob passing him or the other way around?

since bob is out working on the car....
his current weight is around 2330 (without driver)... not sure what it was a couple weeks ago.
with the other car above - it was prepped for the enduro and was being tweeked that day. so it was bob passing.... but jacques did teach bob how to jump turn 5...
