TSW and Street Survival
TSW and Street Survival
Just a quick note to let everyone know that we won't be in tomorrow - we'll be out running the Tire Rack Street Survival School with the Lone Star Chapter (LSC) of the BMWCCA! We're putting on two schools a year now!
Tire Rack's Street Survival program is the BMWCCA Foundation's teen driving program.
Scott's the committee chair for the LSC's Street Survival program. It's something he believes in deeply - teaching teens and young adults (16-21) the critical car control skills that they need to survive on today's streets. And all of us at TSW believe in the program - had it been around when we were young, it sure would have saved a lot of heartache (and $ spent on insurance premiums! Hah!).
TSW is pitching in with instruction and logistics. We're buying all the students, parents, volunteers and instructors breakfast as a BIG, BIG thanks for them coming out to learn skills that ALL kids should have.
This ain't a high school driver's ed course. They leave out a LOT of the really, really important stuff.
The primary emphasis of the Street Survival school is a "hands-on" driving experience in real-world situations. We use the students' own vehicles to teach them about its handling limits and how to control them... (Yes, that also means telling them to look ahead about 1.2 million times on the average day). Let's face it - kids are likely to put themselves in a position where they're going to need these skills, or the other drivers on the road might do it for them!
Our school does morning exercises - threshold braking, ABS braking, evasive lane changes, skidpad (dry and wet), and the 'ol figure 8 to teach about weight transfer. Afternoon features a combined course, with a kidney bean (teaches ALL about increasing and decreasing radius turns), skidpad, lane changes (higher speed offsets), slaloms, and other cool stuff!
For more information on the Tire Rack Street Survival Program, check out http://www.streetsurvival.org/streetsurvival/ - and, if you have a teen driver in your midst or know of one, sign them up for a local school. They're available all over the country! Don't see a school in your area? Request one!
