I could build and test a new intake manifold design if...
Someone could fix me up with another stock intake manifold, maybe a take off from a wreck, or something. The thing is, I need my car to drive my daily 100 mile commute and I could be building the new one in the garage. I need to use an original manifold to cut apart and use it's mounting flanges to the cylinder head, and also for mounting the throttle body. I have the design in my head and have been thinking it through for months. I am a fabricator and have done this sort of thing before, with good returns. The question is: Will it deliver more power than stock? I think so, but I need your help, because I may have some engineer in me, but not much money. If my design works well, we can all benefit from a mod that would be easily accomplised at home. -Jeffy.
Hey! This could be the easiest performance mod you could do!
Changing out from original intake manifolds goes back to the '70s, and I was there doing it. Unless you have a homologation racing special, you can probably stand to gain horsepower from a better intake manifold. Remember- the engine in the R-50 is not a BMW design, so don't think this intake manifold was created by some German rocket scientists. Look at the manifold-does that even look like it's easy to pull air through? Not only that, but the stock manifold is right in the way of the radiator fan's delivery path. It doesn't matter how fast that electric fan runs if there's no place for the hot air to go. This matters when it's 90+ degrees out and you're stuck in freeway traffic, and the engine gets hot and the a/c is cut off by the computer to save the engine. I've been there. If you are reading this forum on mods to non-S minis, then I guess you want to make more power. This thing is not going to cost alot, it's just made of plastic. Help me get an intake manifold, so I can get us some cheap and easy horsepower. -Jeffy.
This sounds like a good idea. the only concern i would have is that on N/A motors the intake manifold is kinda tuned so that all the cylinders get roughly the same amount of air at idle and part throttle, so when you mod the manifold or build another one you would have to watch that cylinder 1 and 2 are getting enough air otherwise you would start misfiring at idle and part throttle. but again it sound like a good idea and if i hear of any maifolds ill be sure to let you know.
I believe I've got equal air distribution covered, but you are right to bring it up. I'd like a chance to prove it, though. Does anyone know of a good used parts source? I really do want to give this thing a go. -Jeffy.
