At tirerack.com in 225/40-17 you have a choice of:
Hoosier A6
Hoosier R6
Both $230 each
40 treadwear C traction and only for competition use.

If you are headed for the track/autocross and have a spare set of tires for street use to get you there or if you trailer your car then Hoosiers in this size can be good.

225/40-17 is not for street use at all.

For one set of tires for street and track use the 215/45-17 or 215/40-17 is a better choice and you have a large selection of possible tires.

Which suspension do you have?
What are you going to use the tires for? Street only or some autocross, driving school, or track? What percentage of the time?
If for street use, what is your weather like? Much rain? Any snow?

Any plans to upgrade suspension?
