16" Tires - What did you get and order?

I think I got All-Season tires when I did not order them. I have the 16" Goodyear Excellence 195/55s. These seem to be all season tires from what I can tell. What tires did you get and order?

I have the Excellence runflats installed on my '05 R53 MCS and they have transformed the ride and handling of the car for the better. I got them as R56 MCS takeoffs from a friend of mine who just took delivery last week of a basic spec '07 MCS.

These are second generation runflats and ride and handle more like normal radial tires. Gone are the harshness of the old 1st gen runflats. RunOnFlat technology will replace the old Goodyear EMT (Emergency Mobility Technology) and Dunlop's DSST (Dunlop Self Supporting Technology). Goodyear owns Dunlop tire, so if you order a new R56 with 17" tires, you'll get the Dunlop version of RunOnFlat technology.

Here is the official RunOnFlat technology Goodyear website:

http://eu.goodyear.com/home_en/tires/runonflat/

RunOnFlat technology was officially introduced by Goodyear in March of 2005 primarely in Europe. These tires are still too new in Northamerica and for the most part you can only get them on a new vehicle fitted as OEM equipment (Like MINI, etc).

The ride and handling quality of these tires is outstanding IMHO. Far superior to the 1st gen runflat technology in everyway.

Tirerack.com already lists "the 195/55R16 Goodyear Excellence runflats as $212 per tire. Yeah they are very expensive. Compare that to $173 per tire for Dunlop Sport SP5000 195/55R16 DSST replacements.

I got my whole set for just $450!!!! That works out to about $112 per tire. The tires were brand new takeoffs with just a few miles driven on them (From the dealership to my friends home).

U sure? I looked at cars yesterday and the 17s seemed to have the same old runflats as before, Dunlop 9000... it was dark though so I could not see well.

The 16s are definitely the Goodyears and are very nice compared to the old 16s.

Yep. all new R56 MINIs in the US come equipped with second generation runflats. Those Dunlop 9000 17"inchers feature RunOnFlat technology, not the old DSST. But yeah, the sidewall looks identical to the old Dunlop runflats.

C4 - be careful - the new runflats came along with a revised rim design that includes a second hump to restrain the tire bead when running without air pressure. Not sure if the new tires side walls are more flexible, or what the hazard might be, but look into it. Google EH2+ hump wheels.

My main interest is if anyone is getting 16" summer/performance tires or if all they are shipping is All Season at this point.

I checked with Goodyear Europe and they said that the Excellence runflats can be safely used in the R50/53 rims. They are even listed as compatible tires for the outgoing model.

The tires were installed perfectly fine in my R84 rims. All that Goodyear requires is that your vehicle is either equipped with a direct or indirect Tire Pressure monitoring system.

Good news!

I requested all-season with taking delivery in the winter. I have not looked, but I'll say that the have more grip in the snow than the supposedly all-season rubber that came on our Mazda3.

With the exception of the Goodyear Excellence, does anyone know of any other changes to this chart posted on the MINI2 forum on 12/15/06?

Ok - I checked my car when was out this afternoon and I have Conti's on mine. 195-55-16s. Now I've forgotten the exact model name but it ends in SSR.

So, I ordered the All-Season and I got Conti's. I don't know if the Goodyears cost more, or are considered more performance oriented.

Thanks Greg, that helps, the Conti SSRs are an all season. From this Goodyear link they don't mention snow at all so maybe the Excellence is considered a summer performance tire. I guess the reference I saw that they were all-season on MINI2 was incorrect. Ken's link there above does have one person now referring to them as a performance tire also.

Why did MINI cast new molds for R90, R94, R95, R97, R98, R99 and R105 wheels to incorporate the EH2+ hump if the 1st Generation wheels are "safe" to use with 2nd generation run flats?

MINIUSA was clueless when I asked them this question ... giving me the standard "check with your dealer's service department" answer.

I left a message with my dealer's service department asking this question ... but no reply as of yet.

Or maybe ContiProContact SSR that are All-Season? Greg can you read the sidewall again! I didn't take the time to find out that SSR means run-flat I thought that was the model of tire.

MINIAC, do you agree that the Excellence is a Summer Performance tire from that link? It's also on this page above the other with the other Goodyear performance tires.

I just went outside in the snow at midnight, 20deg out, to check what tires they are. Man, somebody slap me with a big raw fish!

they are ContiProContacts - they are indeed the all seasons.

Not to hijack the thread, but I noticed the comments about the rims. Does this mean you can't install non-runflats later on? I plan to run them, while carrying a donut in case of...bad luck.

I think you can always put conventional tires on. The extra rim hump is meant to restrain the bead from slipping off the edge of the rim when there is no air pressure to keep it in place.

Since you don't run when flat with conventional tires, there is no issue.

SSR stands for Self Supporting Runflat ...

http://www.conti-online.com/generato...reifen_en.html

The Tire Rack classifies both the Goodyear Excellence RunOnFlat and ContiProContact SSR as Grand Touring All-Season Tires, which put them somewhat lower in the "performance pecking order" ...

In 16" size? You'll get the same tires I have: 195/55R16 Goodyear Excellence RunOnFlat technology:

From the links I provided it appears to me the Excellence tires are not an all season tire. There is no mention of snow etc. Tire rack is not the final say in tire type, though I really like buying from them! The ContiProContact SSRs are without question All-Season tires.

So, until we see someone with different results in the USA we can assume:

Order 16" All Season - Get ContiProContact SSRs
Order 16" Performance - Get Goodyear Excellence

I have not heard of anyone getting something different from this. If so please post it here so we can get a more accurate count.
