Cruise Control Dropout?

Has anyone experienced a problem with the cruise control? We'll be motoring along--straight and level--and suddenly the cc quits working. This has happened half a dozen times already, for no known reason. Thoughts? This one is going to be tough to troubleshoot since it's so intermittant.

hmm, I wonder if the early R56 builds in Europe where they had an issue with the length of the MFSW wiring harness being too short wasn't fully solved? *bites nails*

If it is like most cars, there will be an electronic module that controls the Cruise. The dealership will probably just switch it out with a new one. I have the same problem in my VW, but it is old, and I don't want to pay for a new one. I don't know how the MINI works, however. Just my guess.

You may want to play with some basic things like how soon your clutch and brake pedal travel normally disengage the cruise control. Not sure how they are set up but it could be one of those needs just a small amount of adjustment.

YES!!! It happend to me. I'll be cruising at about 80 then suddenly its like something in the car slams on the breaks and it goes down to 60 and it keeps dropping from there. Both my dealer and service guy acted like I am stupid and must have accidently pressed the break. But I have noticed it when my feet are no where near the break or accelerator. I am brining it in Monday for them to fix this. I'll let you know what they say tomorrow.

Are you hands anywhere near the cc buttons on the steering wheel? I dropped my cruise once because the palm of my hand grazed the buttons. Also, if you even tap the brake or clutch, it can disengage. Something to consider.

We did--nothing near the buttons, or pedals.

Definately not hitting any steering wheel buttons. Trust me, after the MINI people treated me like a "dumb woman" I was extremely cautious and aware of what I was doing when the cruise disengaged. Plus, this happens repeatidly (but intermittenly) during trips.

Not in my MINI, but....

I had a C 230 MB with a similar problem. I had changed the tires from the normal size to a different aspect ratio. The ABS sensors were detecting a different speed for the front tires from the back, and would shut off the cruise control. So it could be a problem with an ABS sensor or different size tires front to back, but more likely the sensor.

I like the idea of the car periodically asking me: "hey, wouldn't you like to actually drive me every once in a while?"

Me too, but my husband...actually, I do use it to go through speed traps. Very handy for that!

Isn't it annoying when we get treated like idiots sometimes by "experts"? Especially when Mini owners often know more than the dealers, thanks to forums like these.

We'll I'm in a loaner car while they try to research this issue. So far it seems everyone is unaware of any cruise control problems. Hopefully this won't take too long to figure out.

Yeah, the trouble is, it will be hard to troubleshoot. Happened to us 3 times during the weekend, but that was over about 40 miles of CC. There's no pattern that I can see.

Fortunately it's not the worst thing that could happen. I'd be happy to drive without it except on really boring roads (and those pesky speed traps!).

daffodildeb- Have you noticed anything strange about your breaks? My breaks were super-sensitive. I thought that was just because it was new, but they are telling me there is an usual amount of wear on my breaks for the miles, and we are thinking the cruise control issue stems from the breaks.

Also, my MINI doesn't coast when I take my foot off the accelerator, it comes to a jerky stop without me pressing on the breaks, anyone else notice that?

I'll say it seems like I have a lot of brake dust for 300 miles. But sometimes they just make a lot of dust.

I haven't noticed anything unusual about the brakes (I'm assuming "breaks" is a typo). They are sensitive in a normal way, i.e. good. The car coasts perfectly well. Dust is normal for the German-type pads (ugh).
