First and Second Gen MINIs
I find it a bit odd that the R53 is referred to as a "First Generation" MINI on this site and elsewhere. Didn't Alec Issigonis design the first generation MINI (Morris Mini Minor)? Just an interesting observation. To better keep track of major design changes, perhaps we are on generation three? Or perhaps the first generation MINIs are better referred to as "proper" MINIs--as some who own them adamantly demand. We definitely need some uniformity here... I'll be lost without it, constantly confused.

It's all in the CAPS
Pretty simple solution....Mini is used for any and all classic minis
MINI is the name used for all post-classic builds.
If you see CAPS it is not a classic model...(yet)

Didn't the classic's go through 4 changes, MkI to MkIV? If so. wouldn't the 01-06 be MINI MkI's and the 07's be MkII's?
