I wouldn't bother with the JCW head, personally... I've looked inside, and they barely do any work at all from what I can tell...

For the price, you'd be better served with a different aftermarket head and cam!

the head is WAY over priced... and is only 15% over stock on the exhuast side only...

txwerks is right on par with what he said...

if you like I can get you the fireballed Mad Mod 1 head at anytime... for the special price of 1399.00 with all gaskets.... through the rogues...

id like to see some dyno numbers :] sounds clips, and stuff. any one know of some links? I remember all the discussions about head work on the MC but I dont recall any actuall numbers.. you think with the head work, and an ITB setup it would push the same numbers as a TC mini running low boost?

First off...

I'll echo the voices of others. The JCW head isn't worth it's cost. That said, there's more to a re-worked head than just hitting it with a die grinder! Also, watch out for number, they are easy to be swamped by.

My best advice I can give is to work with your prefered vendor or tuner, discuss your need, and go from there. All aftermarket head work is NOT created equal!

And no, a head won't equal a turbo. But it will be a good base for the motor, give you a lot more at pretty much every RPM if you get the right kind of work done, and when you do add a turbo, it will give you more than if you hadn't done the head.....

Good luck,

Matt

thanks for you input matt, I meant a mc that has the head and an ITB set up, if that would match the power of a turbo mini running 6psi

It sounds just like any other Cooper with a CAI, Miltek header and Borla cat-back... Deep, throaty and awesome.

I don't believe in dyno numbers, personally - my guess would be north 140 whp and 135 ft/lbs. But, I can tell you that the car picked up SECONDS on the same track, with no other changes but the head and cam. Straight speeds were noticeably higher - by 5-10 mph depending on the straight. And, it's fully capable of breaking 140 mph...

Yes, it does have the gearing (running MTH)...

We re-worked the head ourselves, by hand - if you search for the saga on NAM, you'll find it... It took about 80 hours to complete the head work and install it (9 hours to install). We spent about 70 hours really taking our time on the porting, shaping, and then went a bit overboard on the polishing part (which doesn't do a whole lot of good, but it was fun anyway), lapping the valves in by hand, re-assembling, checking, etc.

If I had to do it all over again, by hand, would I? Maybe... it was great fun and a beating at the same time. There are a lot of good head choices out there where someone else has put all the time/work into it that will get you 95%+ of what we ended up with... The extra time we spent probably netted such minimal gains that it wasn't really worth it in retrospect... but, we did it to do it, and were going to do everything we could to max it out...
