My '05 S has now suffered it's second failure with Koni FSD's. The right rear has died and the car clunks horribly. The first failure came at 9 months (also the right rear) and the replacement has lasted less than three.

Koni replaced the first set (although I had to pay to have them installed) and I'm waiting to hear back about this second failure.

Should I give up on them or try something new? My driving is primarily city and I am looking for something to soften the ride somewhat.

I have had FSDs for about six months w/o any problems. Has anyone else had FSD issues???

 

I've been running FSDs with no problems for 14K miles (more than a year). My daily drive is over very bumpy San Francisco streets and I'm using stock springs.

 

I had FSD on for around 1 year, approximate 12000KM and has no problem. Previously I had the clunk noise problem with my stock shocks since the mech installed the HSport springs improperly. Could it be an install problem which cause the clunk noise to your FSD?

 

Doubtful that it's an install problem. My mechanic has an outstanding reputation throughout the region, working on both street and race Porsches, BMW's and such. My springs are stock Minis.

 

Was the failure on the same right rear shock?

That all sounds pretty bad, 2 sets in a year. Plus install costs.

I'd like to hear if anyone else has had problems, people on these boards regard FSD's so highly for street cruising.

 

I'm considering these with H-sport springs so I would be very interested to hear what others have to say also...

I wanted to ask you about the ride quality. Was it much softer with this setup
and stock springs? Anyone for that matter with FSD's and stock springs.
I have an 05 S and wanted to soften the ride. Freeway driving sucks right now.

I use the FSD's with stock springs, and it has been a worthwhile change for me. When you hit a bumps or road imperfections, the initial impacts are less sharp and jarring. There is no compromise in handling. Some say the FSD's actually improve handling (over stock struts) because the tires maintain better contact over road imperfections.

I don' t understand the part in your first post where you said you had to pay for the install on the replacement shocks. Shocks are easy to replace. Were you too busy at the time? Live in a City? I'm a do it yourself guy with a garage full of tools; that's why I asked. There were two things, however, in 2006 that I brought to a mechanic. My job was just killing me last year and I truly didn't have any time available. Anyway, if it becuase you lack tools and live in or near the north San Fransico Bay Area, I can help you with stuff like that.

just today we installed the 14th and 15th sets we have sold and installed and we have sold another 7 sets shipped to others which they installed. of these, my car (05 S) has had one of the very earliset sets produced on it for 21,000 miles now. (installed at 13000, now has 34000). Thus far, I am aware of one customer who was blowing the seal out of the right front on a specific turn with a big upwards bump in it, and without bump stops and H sport springs he bottomed it hard. He reinstalled with a stock bump stop cut in half, and I believe it has been ok although he thought it was still bottoming on that curve/bump, just not hard. what springs are you using? are you using bump stops? which type? can you think of a specific spot you frequent that might have a bottom out/upward heave of some type that could be blowing this seal? Not defending the product here, trying to help identify whats happening, as I have had excellent results with them.

 

Sorry to hear about that mdreuben. I have had good results as well with the FSD's...although I've only been driving with them for about 1000 miles now. The impact is more spongy, but I'm not sure if the difference in the handling is specifically as a result of the shocks because at the time of the install I had an H-Sport adjustable sway bar installed at the same time. Neway I haven't had a problem with the FSD's.

 

Problem solved - mounting bolts at the top of the shock had come loose - just enough to bounce around.
