JCW Brake Pad Equivalent?

From all the NAM Posts, I do not see that anyone has found aftermarket pads (such as Hawk HPS) that fit the JCW front calipers. I have only seen the option of getting the pads relined by places such as Carbotech. The relining is a little complicated because you need to supply pad plates.

I have trouble believing that BMW would select a front brake caliper size and pad plate that is unique to the JCW brakes. My guess is that the JCW front brake caliper/pad was selected from another BMW model, such as a 3 series or Z4. Does anyone know if the JCW caliper/pad is from another BMW model and if so what model and year.

My thought is, if we can determine what other BMW model (if any) has the same brake caliper/pads as the JCW package, then it might be easier to find brake pads by using the BMW model/year information.

I will send an email message to JCW to see what they can tell us.

The pads have a BMW part number.

I was wondering if anyone knows if the 07 brake rotors for the JCW are able to fit on an 05 with JCW. The new front rotors are dilled and sloted. I think it would be the way to go.

The JCW pad goes by a different D # - a new one. It may be from another BMW model - or as is often the case another number may be interchangeable but according to specs it is a different pad.

I received a response back from John Cooper Works and they stated that the JCW pads were unique to Mini. I do not think they understood my question so I have reworded and submitted my question to JCW.

I realize that the pads are unique to Mini because the pad material is unique to Mini. Thus, the BMW part number is unique to Mini JCW pads.

What I would like to know is if the JCW caliper is the same as used on another BMW model, which would help determine if the JCW pad backing plate shape and pad thinkness is the same as used on another BMW model (such as a 3 series or Z4). That way we can provide a BMW model/year to a pad manufacturer so they can lookup to see what pad options are available. The problem most pad manufactures have is that they have no idea what size plate/pad is used for a Mini JCW brake but they do know what is used on most BMW models.

Pad manufacturers DO know what shape it is. D1204 - the diagram is 2 posts up?

Even if the caliper IS the same as used on another BMW the pad shape may be different. Those tabs on the end of the pad ride in slots on the caliper bracket.

I already searched for other similar pads - there is a Mercedes pad that is close - but it's not available in any good compounds either.

MiniBrakes,
Thanks for the clarification on the D1204 plate/pad. I could not get anywhere from the link you provide above so I was not able to get the actual pad/plate type. This will help.

I believe it was from my request that you searched for those pads on some emails we had going back and forth. I now have been told that the '07 Cooper "S" will be coming from the factory with these same JCW brakes as standard equiptment. I hope you can use that information to get some of these aftermarket Mfg's to come out with replacement pads. Being that they will be standard there will be alot more cars out there that have them. Thanks, Steve

I recieved a response back from JCW. JCW does not know what other BMW models might have the same brakes as the JCW brakes because the JCW brakes were developed by BMW not JCW.

I know MINIBrakes has performed a lot of research with nothing found. I have also contacted Porterfield whom are doing some research and will get back to me.

Pads can be made from a different pad or re-lined by Carbotech.

4 weeks or so - $250 a set or so.

Please look at our vendor anouncement here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=92181

Carbotech will have the backing plates in the next few weeks, and I am taking orders for them now.
