JCW Resonator Eliminator

I have a factory installed JCW kit and love it but for one thing. The exhaust doesn't sound sporty enough. I don't want it shake the walls or anything like that but it would be nice hear a decent bark when I hit the gas. Has anyone installed a resonator eliminator on their JCW such as the one supplied by mymini? http://www.myminiparts.com/proddetai...d=MMJCRE&cat=7

What are your impressions? Are there other ways of improving the sound?

I've heard it ( I am near MyMini) - and its great and would not hesitate. Nice sport tone but not too much. I expect it will give you exactly what you want. Pipe quality is first rate.

Check the thread in GP section and others. One draw back is rice sound until warm. Had on my 03 JCW and on my 06 GP. Pipe is good quality. get new muffler clamp from them too!

Someone said his MA described the mod as the "snap crackle and pop" mod b/c of all the popping that occurs when you lift the throttle. I think it's kinda cool, but at least one poster was offended by the noise and reverted back to the resonator. One nice thing about the myminiparts unit is that you can switch back and forth to suit your taste, but it is kind of expensive. I simply cut a piece of a stock MCS exhaust to fit. It works great, and cost me $20.

i don't think there is any real big claim in HP. It does free things up so it has to contribute something but can't be much.

There is no gain in HP. The resonator is a straight pipe if you ever looked in one.. The noise level is ok on a plain JCW car as in my old car. Burble is much louder on my 06 GP. If you don't like it you could add a short Magnaflow 6 in resonator to change the tone.

$135 for a straight pipe? Especially when a straight pipe is standard on every MCS except those with JCW exhaust?

I'd find someone giving away a stock exhaust and use that. I only bought the back part of a JCW exhaust and it bolted up perfectly to the stock "resonator eliminator" pipe. It does sound nice and rumbly.

So, if I am replacing my stock exhaust with the full JCW exhaust can I leave the stock pipe in place and bolt up the rear? Or, is welding required to mate the stock pipe to the JCW rear section? This would be on an '05.

My JCW exhaust came in two pieces that clamp together; cutting off the stock rear section allowed the back half of the JCW to simply bolt up to the rest of the stock exhaust in exactly the same way. If you then ever want to try the JCW resonator it will be directly interchangeable with the piece of stock MCS pipe.

That said, the '05+ JCW exhaust has a restrictive crush (to clear the reinforcements added to the convertible model) right before the Y-Pipe that is probably responsible for the +3.75psi of backpressure measured on Mini2. If you don't have a convertible, it would probably be best for performance to cut out and replace that section.

I think $75 for a one-ball reroute pipe is much more justifiable than $135 for a straight pipe with a flange, because that is not just a simple 90º bend and has to change from 2.25" to 2.5". Plus I paid only $15 more than that for the JCW catback!

I have really wanted to do this as well, just haven't come up with cajones to do so.
I guess if I heard someone else's JCW with the resonectomy then I'd go for it.

Just Did It

instead of paying the $135 or so for the Resonator Eliminator I just went to the local Exhaust place to take the resonator out and add a straight pipe there. From inside the car the sound has barely changed, but you hear more of the back firing (which I like ). From the outside it is a totally different story... well this you can hear for your self... the problem is I can't seem to upload the files on NAM because of the type of file and I don't know how to convert it.

If you like to hear both the before and after, then I have no problem in e-mailing them to you just PM me and it will be on the way.

All in all.... I LOVE IT

Thanks for the thread. Even on my GP yes I would like a more authoritative sound when getting into it!

BTW, the '06 (factory) JCW exhausts and center pipe are welded to the pipe and not clamped as suggested above - a single piece from the flange to the tips. I just got a killer deal on an '06 exhaust and will try it on as is for awhile before deciding to modify it or not. I'll probably get the flat section just forward of the y-pipe removed at a minimum. Then again, cutting out the resonator and this section and replacing the whole section at the same time would probably not cost a whole lot more.

you are most welcome . I try to document everything I do with the car by video and pictures. the car sounds really nice and I want to drive it even more. My brother just recieved his 07 300C SRT8 and he still can't keep his hands of my MINI
as I said before I have more videos that I can't upload due to file formate. Two of the videos will show the difference in over all sound (one as stock JCW and the other with lots of M7 mods)

glad you liked it JPMM

Did mine today -- this thread was the conviencing factor. After 4500 RPM, it sounds like a totally different car. The parked clips are nice, but they just don't evoke the growl heard by rowing through the gears.

I had decided that I didn't need to do this mod until I installed my B&M short shifter this weekend. The JCW resonator is pressed up against the heat shield and the new dust cover and resonates (loudly) in the car. So I have a choice of dropping the exhaust, removing the dust cover and reinstalling the heat shield and exhaust.... or cutting out the resonator. From what I've read removing the dust cover and reinstalling the heat shield won't hurt anything and is obviously a no cost fix. But, this also seems a good excuse to get the resonator cut out and replaced with a straight pipe - more like the Miltek. Mine is a factory JCW exhaust so the clamp-on eliminator is not an option.

How would the JCW without resonator compare to a Milltek with resonator? I know the weight between the Milltek and JCW are close. Would you think the JCW non resonator exhaust and the Milltek provide the same performance level on the same MINI?

Here is my $.02, I just put a JCW exhaust on my MCS without the resonator, I couldnt be more pleased. It is not too loud, doesnt drone, and does not sound like rice. Add to that the two best benefits, the weight lost over the stock mufflers is huge and you can feel it while turning, and the snap crackle and pop is there more than ever! Louder and more frequent, I'd recomend a JCW exhaust with out the resonator.
