Has anyone elses dealer tried to tell them that checking tire tread was not part of your service visit?

I had this issue recently with mine where they didn't check it at my service and then I hit a pothole, which bent my rim on the passenger side front and put a bubble in the driverside front. I then tried to collect on my road hazard warranty for the wheel and 2 new tires, but was denied because the tires were at tread line. My service appointment was just 2-3 weeks before hand, and I just assumed (I obviously shouldn't have) everything was fine, so I didn't go through and double check everything. At the point of taking my car in for those issues my front tires were at .5mm and my rears at 4.5mm.

Was I wrong for assuming that they checked the tread life?

 

that's a tough one. the dealer was reluctant to tell you that
you were low on tire tread at the time of the service. they
should have warned you about it for safety reasons.

but not sure if that would have prevented you from hitting
the pot hole and damaging your wheels.

im not familiar with the road hazard warranty so can't
really tell what is covered and what's not.

typically though, i would assume that the owner would
check their own tires, but i doubt my wife ever looks at
the tires and i KNOW she doesn't care to check tire pressure
(well, cause i do it anyway. ) so you might be able
to convince their service manager for help.

 

Well I wasn't saying that it would have prevented it. I perfectly understand it was part my carelessness. And tire pressure I check all the time. It just really bothered me when I asked my SA why the tread wasn't checked and he just shrugged.

 

This seems to me like total BS, and the reason so many people have trouble with MAs for selling them such ridiculous warranties and SA's for finding ways to not honor them.

No SA that I have ever heard of is going to check every little item on every car in the shop. Maybe if you had asked?
Sorry, no sympathy here. Take some responsibility for your own car. If you were regularly checking pressure, as you stated, why didn't you notice that your fronts were bald?

 

Every service has a checklist of things to check. If tire tread is one of them then I don't see where this comes from. If tire tread is not on the list then I completely agree.

The complete list of what is checked at each service should be available to the customer does someone have it to post? This would answer a few questions.

Personally I would think that checking tire tread would be on the list because the dealer could make more $$$ from labor on installing new tires.

 

Completely agree. The SA missed a major upsell opportunity, and did his customer a disservice by not pointing out a potential safety problem.

 

I'm not asking for sympathy. I'm simply asking if that is something that they should automatically check. I wasn't in there for just some quirk, I was in there for my 10k mi. service. I know I'm at fault to a point for not checking, more regularly. But that wasn't the question. I just think that was something they should have checked. They would have made the money off the rotation then if not new tires, just by being honest.

 

which service did you have? oil, inspection 1, inspection 2?

inspection 1 calls for treadware check- see your Service and Warranty Booklet for the details of each inspection.

Even if they measured them back then, you would still have the dent and been denied coverage....dent is most likely caused by low pressures and low profile tires - what size tires did you have?

I have 17" wheels with the original pirelli runflats. The bent rim would have been covered under the road hazard warranty. The only reason it wasn't was because of the tread life on the tires.

The pressure at the time of the incident was just under 35psi. Which is right under where it was supposed to be. I didn't lose pressure until the rim was bent.
