Got this email from NavTeq today
So I got this email from Navteq today to fill out this 5 minute survey, it was pretty interesting. They had all these different packages for Nav Updates with prices and wanted to know how likely you'd be to buy them for the prices, and how often you think you need updates.
Dear HOWARD,
According to our records you own a satellite navigation system / a vehicle
fitted with a satellite navigation system. Given the speed at which technology
evolves, we at NAVTEQ are continually evaluating and improving our map and
navigation products based on feedback from users of navigation systems. As a
user of digital map data, your opinions play a very important part in directly
helping shape the future of our navigation product offerings.
This research is conducted by GfK on behalf of NAVTEQ. GfK is an independent
research agency and as such your answers will remain entirely confidential and
you will receive no marketing or sales communication as a direct result of
participating in this survey. The survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes
of your time covering a range of topics related to navigation systems.
To access the survey please click once on the link below. Alternatively, you
can copy and paste the URL from this email into the address box of your internet
browser.
Please click once only, do not double-click.
Your response is much appreciated and will help to ensure that customer feedback
continues to play an important part in providing products that fully meet your
needs. As a thank you for taking part, we will enter you in a prize draw, where
you could win one of three $150 prizes.
Best regards,

Best regards,
Nice to see they are surveying the market...
Their business model of several annual updates with each available for $200 is going to do nothing but drive people to the illegal underground market. I would update every time if the price were right - but with a $200 sticker, I will either update every few years (and be constantly mad at NAVTEQ for not having the most current map) or hold my nose and look for an illegal source.
Anyway, I am hoping they do a critical evaluation of their pricing - enough NAV systems are out there now where annual updates could provide a huge sustainable cash flow for them if done right.
