R50/53 Where on the car can I find the VIN?
Where on the car can I find the VIN?
I have one of the convertibles on order that was accidentally given a 2007 VIN code.
I have since been given a "new" VIN (same as the old VIN except for the year digit and the check digit), but it appears that MINI did not have to re-build the 147 affected cars.
So, this sounds like they figured out how to change the existing VIN tags on the cars. The affected cars that had already made it to the states did NOT have to be shipped back to the factory, so changing the VINs sounds like something that can be done at the VDC or at the factory.
When the car arrives, I'd like to make sure they changed ALL of the VIN markings, but I'm not sure where they all are. I know about the tag on the dash, the one on the right-hand strut tower under the bonnet, and the label in the doorjamb. I've also heard that there's one hidden behind the license plate, but I haven't taken the plate off of my wife's car to check.
I'm assuming the VIN is on the engine block as well, but not sure where. How about the chassis itself? Other body panels? Transmission/differential?
Any suggestions as to other places to check when the car arrives would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Scott

I'm not positive that MINI's do this - but on the windows etched in the glass.

Thanks again. I've tried Google, but can't find anything MINI-specific. That link in your first post is very generic, and basically points out that the VIN can be *anywhere* on the car. I'm trying to find out exactly where it is on the MINI so that I don't miss any when I check it.

Also...I wouldn't go looking for this one (requires you to pull the plastic back/off) but there is def. one stamped inside the wheel well of the driver side.

The last six digits of the VIN are the sequence numbers of your car in the production run. The numbers on your motor(and frequently the transmission) are usually just these last six digits so the 7th digit and check digit won't be there.
