Will the following fit on an '04 MCS with stock uspension? I have 16 x 7.5 Kosei K1 Racing rims and can get some Ventus Rs2 Z212 tires in size 225/45/16? Will they rub?

The Hankook website says they have a section width of 8.9 inches and a tread width of 8 inches. Compared to my Goodyear GS-D3 205/50/16s which they list as 8.4 inch section width and 7.1 tread width. If I'm reading the numbers correctly, I would expect the widest part of the tire to be .25 inches closer and the edge of the tread to be .45 inches closer to the suspension members, no? My uncallibrated eyeball says it might be close...

Will I need spacers? How do spacers work with hub-centric rims, do they extend the flange as well? I'll be using for occasional autocross and random track days. Any spacer recommendations? (size/brand/vendor) Thanks.

Given your stock suspension you will be fine with the rims which have a +43mm offset. The tires will be fine for that size rim and for your MINI. No spacers needed. The 215/45-16 is smaller outer tire diameter than stock and width is not too wide.

You can confirm this all with Alex@tirerack.com. I think you might be buying from Tirerack??

 

5-8mm spacers are not hubcentric (at least none I have seen), as there's not enough material there to make it work. 15mm and larger usually do have a center that's machined to the OEM centerbore - at least H&R does.

I'd think you should be fine with that setup - might require 5mm spacers to clear the strut in front, though. I'm running 225/50R15's on 15x6.5 wheels with a +40 ET and no issues for autocross and track, though. Those are taller and the same width. Of course, I do have camber plates in the front to help them clear the fender lip... In the rear, they also clear just fine...

Keep in mind that the 225/45R16's are shorter than OEM fitments, I think...

Tire Rack doesn't carry Hankook, right?

I'm running those wheels and tires in 215/45/16 with no problems on my Cooper with the JCW suspension upgrade.

 

I have that exact combo Kosei's and Z212 225/45/16 and no rubbing on MCS SS+ no lowerng

 

Thanks for all the replies. I got them back and they fit fine. It's interesting the variations in the same size tires. My 205 Yoko AVS ES100s are about the same width at the widest part even though the tread width is probably an inch smaller. The Z212s seem very square shouldered, if that's a word.

I've never had shaved tires before. Any tips?

 

I ran these tires at Summit Point last weekend for a CCA DE and they worked great! I felt I had a very high level of grip (even on a misty track) and when they started to give, they gave-way very predictably. Even with my stock-lack-of -camber I had pretty even tire wear all around.

I'm looking at 215 or 225 RS2's for my new 16" set. JCW suspension. Good to know they'll work.

 

When compared to a 195/55-16 the 225/45-16 has a .4 inch smaller diameter (1.9%). 215/45-16 diameter is 3.4% smaller than stock.

This is my first "Official" post. I recently bought my first 03 MCS with the 16" X-lite wheels. Coming from a BMW-only background I am blown away by this car. All of my friends (most of which own American V8's) get out of the car with an ear-to-ear grin!

I've spent the last hour poring over post after post for the best tire size for these wheels. I dont need the largest tire, but I want the most rubber without rubbing problems. I've owned 4 E30's and currently have an E36 328is and I've ran Yoko's on all of them. The E36 currently has AVSES100's on it. I drive this MINI pretty much daily so I need something like that tire or harder (no AVS sports or Advan A048's... LOL).

So whats the largest tire width I can get away with on the 16's? 205? 215?

Should be okay with 225/45-16 Hankook Z212. For sure okay with 215/45-16 Hankooks or the same size Falken Azenis 615.

Both of the above are great summer tires which are far more streetable than A048s.

So do most people run 225's on their Mini's? I have 225's on my E36 even thought the spacing on the rims are different I might be able to slide one of those tires under the fender just to see. Dont want to cut anything and I REALLY dont want any rubbing when I turn tightly. I trust your judgement, but I would like to hear from more people, especially those running 225's with stock suspension and stock wheels.

I ran 225/50R15's on stock-size wheels with no issues - and my car is lowered 1.2".

Hankooks seem to run narrower for whatever reason - e.g. in the 225/50R15 size, the z212 is the same width or slightly narrower than the 205/50R15 RT-615 Azenis.
