Factory iPod adapter problems('02 MCS)

Hi there, first time poster here.

Problem: weird problems with the factory iPod adaptor, and was wondering about any possible solutions.

Car: 02 MCS with MSFW
Adaptor: Official BMW iPod adapter, version 2.1 & 1.1(on that box, I forgot the exact specifics).
iPod: 60 gig video model, purchased about 3 weeks ago.

Symptoms:

1. The radio can now be turned off and on without the key in the ignition. Heck, I can even eject the CD with the radio completely off(not sure if I could do that before)

2. If I turn on the ignition, the radio doesn't come on. If I turn off the ignition, the radio stays on. The radio's now completely independent of the ignition/accessories

3. After ~20 minutes of driving & playing, the radio decides to shut off. It doesn't happen again if I turn it back on for the rest of the session.

When my friend and I did an installation, the instructions from '04 + thel later 'wordless workshop' ones were a bit confusing. There was a reference to a bullet connector molex connector which I beleive my head unit didn't have. After all was said and done, we had a single violet-colored wire left over.

On the 'wordless workshop' instructions, there was a wire left over as well.

Did we hook it up wrong? Or is this the expected behavior?

Another annoyance is that when you are done motoring and take the iPod out, it insists on turning OFF the shuffle mode and turns on repeat mode. Ugh.

Looks like this weekend I might have to do some recheck of the wiring setup.

You've hooked it up wrong.
The behavior it's exhibiting says it doesn't know when the ignition is on. The radio will play on it's own for 20 minute clips with or without the key in the igntion.
I've seen the hookup, but haven't actually done the install so I don't have details. Do a search here, though, and you'll probably find more detailed instructions.
