Just my opinion, but I think the "coolest" frame is one that is very simple and does not obscure parts of the lettering on the plate.

This simple chrome one frames the plate nicely without drawing too much attention to itself.

There's a small trend in my area to have a plate frame from somewhere exotic or well-known. For example: Beverly Hills, Hawaii, New York City, etc... I have plate frames from Desert Mini in Las Vegas. Not much cachet there if you live in Henderson, but quite the conversation piece here in Vancouver, BC

Are you talking about the actual holder that screws to the boot?
Number 20 in this pic...

I don't know about anything else you could use, BUT
I do know that MINI owners should take the screws out of your rear license plate and put some grease or anti-seize on the bolts. The nuts that you are screwing into are only held by the plastic that is molded around them, they are open at the back with just a little piece of foam to cushion the body from the holder. What happens is, water gets in there and the nuts rust to the license plate bolts, and when you go to loosen them, the nuts just spin in the plastic. You will then have to basically rip the plate off the holder, and then, of course, buy a new one.

Dragging up an old thread...

PARTSMAN is right, I just destroyed the rear plate mount because it was the only way to remove the plate. Michigan made the simple blue plates illegal this year, and mine expired yesterday. So I need to install a new plate. Looks like I'll be fabricating a new license plate mount.

I've got the "Lets Motor" chrome frame - which kindof goes well with the "LTS MOTR" license plate.

The simple mounting plate I made is just a .09" thick piece of aluminum, 10.25" x 5.5". I installed four aluminum M8 rivet nuts, from the backside. So the license plate stands off the fabricated mount about 10mm. Stainless steel button-head cap screws holding the license plate to the rivet nuts.

It'll work for now, but the plate is too far off the body. Looks odd and isn't illuminated as well as it should be. I'll probably have a 3/16" thick piece of aluminum laser-cut, which I'll tap 5/16-24 for plate screws.

I have a nice black trim ring around my PA plate with all 4 screws with black screw caps on them. Just a nice clean finished look for a license plate. ** I also added 2 layers of Dynamate on the back for of the plate so I have no metel to metel rattle closing the boot or driving and I can hear my exaust clearly.
Such a sweet sound.

Chrome UJ OEM frame for me in the rear, black UJ OEM frame in the front The only prob I've had is the little black/chrome caps that cover the screws vibrate off. I did discover tho that Pep Boys sells the caps, while BMW won't w/o buying a new frame.

You COULD get another one and use it in the rear but you'd have to light it to be legal.

I've got a lets motor frame and covered the lighting so it covers only the US spec plate and is not spilling out over the factory euro size plate aiming.

Simple and cheap black plastic frame with plugs over the screw covers. I put a dab of silicon in the plugs to keep them from popping out.

I don't use no stinkin holders ...........................seriously though, I only did this to save weight, although it really doesn't save enough to make any difference.
