From what I can remember, the current engine was jointly developed by BMW and Chrysler. The new engine is developed by Peugeot.

The "Prince" family of engines that will be in the R56, R55, R57 and R58 is was developed predominantly by BMW. It features such BMW technology as twin-scroll turbo-charging and Vanos. BMW is partnering with PSA for manufacturing expertise (it's assembled in the UK with the block coming from France) and economies of scale.

The previous engine was developed predominantly by Chrysler and built in Brazil by Tritec.

No, you're driving a MINI, built by BMW with a BMW/Chrysler engine. Go outside and drive your mini, and tell me it feels like a Chrysler.....

Except Chrysler never used it in the USA. After MB bought out Chrysler, MB backed out of the deal and left the engine mostly to BMW.

Say what you will, it is one stout little motor and handles added pressure like a champ. Just ask FireBall Tim. Fastest MINI in the world.

Daimler-Chrysler used the engine, but not in the US, mostly in the European market. You could just as accurately say that your MINI has a BMW engine, as say it has a Chrysler engine. Neither one builds it, its built in Brazil by a company they jointly own.

built by joint DMX/BMW venture called "Tritech," the engine was once called the "pentagon" but that name was later dropped. Apparently, the BMW engineers were fairly happy working with the engineers from detroit. wadda ya know?

NO you're driving a MINI built by MINI in ENGLAND with parts from BMW and Rover who worked with other compaines that developed and tuned the Chysler 1.6 4-cyl engine. Yes the engine that wasn't even SRT neon ready, but was offered instead as a more economy enigine, and just happens to be assembled in Brazil then shipped to oxford for implementation in to the MINI. The PSA-BMW Turbo chaged engine as mentioned won't be availible until the 07 model year.

The Tritec 1.6L engine found on the Cooper is also used by Chrysler in the european and south african PT Cruiser and some export versions of the Neon but not on models sold in the USA. It is also used by Chinese company Chery on their A15.

The supercharged Tritec 1.6L engine found in the Cooper S is unique to that car worldwide.

The Tritec 1.4L engine is used on the MINI One that is not available in the USA.

You can check out engine information here and company information here

All cars contain parts made by many manufacturers from all over the world. As far as I'm concerned, my '05 has a MINI engine in it and the '07s will have MINI engines also!
